Character

Professionally done and entertaining enough, but hard to take seriously. There are several scenes, that are so overtly dramatic that they are downright silly. The plot is mostly unoriginal and predictable, and some of the things are hard to swallow (like the protagonists' English skills that he apparently learnt just by reading books, pronunciation and all). The characterization is cliched and not very believable which makes it hard to really care about the drama.

Solid film with a great performances and it captures the time and place very well. The social commentary is unmistakable yet appropriate and the personal drama is very engaging. While the plot structure makes things somewhat predictable it still manages to be impacting and pull off a few small surprises.

All the time I ask myself why , why did mike van diem make 1 short movie ( Alaska ), 1 full length ( being this one) which won all these huge awards ( including an Oscar) , and never do something close to cinema again? The set pieces! The acting! The script! The atmospheric tension building! A masterpiece. If not the best , one of the best Dutch movies out there.A must watch for all cinema lovers!

Well deserved Oscar for this movie. I like watching movies who happened in the years 20's.

Classic esthetic. Flawless.

Great atmosphere, solid acting and directing and original script.

Incredibly dreary and grim period drama. I found it impossible to understand or care about who the main characters were or why they acted the way they did. The colour palette alone is life-draining - boy this movie could have used a brightly-coloured tulip or a ray of sunshine. Aside from that, just lots of shouting, grimacing, stern words. Too much conflict with no levity to balance it out. Judging by the votes, I missed a lot of things. Maybe the wrong film for the wrong mood.

Very good film with the interesting Jan Decleir a highlight.

Best Dutch movie. Everyone should watch it.
