Jean-Luc Godard's portrayed affront to pretentious chauvinism by way of sarcastic femme defiance ingeniously brings home the beauty and joy of cinema. Crisply shot and luxuriously paced, his cinematic conversation pre-empts Breathless in form and function, extolling film's capacity to reflect, mock and embrace the lives that exist in the occupied seats. It's a subtle, bravura display anchored by Anne Collette's Masina-like charm offensive.
