This would have gotten a perfect score from me, but I got real frustrated that there were no subtitles when the Indians spoke. It left part of the story hard to follow. Great movie though.

An enjoyable, humanist portrait of the Cheyenne from Ford. This film contains some of the most beautiful shots of Ford's career--some of the sequences seem painterly even. In that sense, the film is a real treat to look at. Widmark's world weary cavalry officer offers the film some complexity, for though the film is about the Cheyenne's trek north to their homeland, Widmark is the central character, narrating the action as we go. A solid final western for the master of them.

Some scenes are very beautiful, but the movie moves at a snail's pace. Stewart and Widmark both seem tired, and Ford's direction seems tired as well.
