A new interpretation that takes the award-winning Broadway show into fresh and expansive cinematic realms, Chicago shifts adroitly from the reality of intrigue, rivalry and betrayal to spectacular fantasies of music and dance, offering tongue-in-cheek commentary on the cult of celebrity and the scandalous lengths to which people will go to attain it. (2nd viewing...reluctantly) Misandristic, cartoonish trash that takes itself way too seriously. The songs are utterly awful and uninsprired to the point of inducing a hemorrhagic stroke. Without a doubt the worst Best Picture winner I've seen. Rob Marshall gets away with murder, only in America...

The cast is completely awful, the production is too big and it has no charm. Bigger is not always better. Doesn't help that the plot is ridiculous. This movie was terrible, which is the same word I use to describe Queen Latifah's life.

Richard Gere is right on target as a smug bastard lawyer, and some of the numbers actually work for me. Queen Latifah also gets one of her best roles here. Musicals, however, are not my thing and it doesn't help that the majority of the cast are non-singers.

The ending destroys any thematic resonance this movie might have held but aside from that, it has catchy, glitzy dance numbers, a fun plot and enough frivolity to make it a fun movie.

I love musicals, but this is dreadful. I'm guessing the stage version is better, but this film adaptation has an awful cast, is really darn garish and jarring, as well as utterly charmless, annoyingly and desperately campy, over-edited, its plot only works because half the characters seem to be morons and the whole idea of making a film adaptation of a musical but then going and having all the musical numbers on a stage seems completely misjudged and comes across very awkwardly.

So good. The score anchors the plot (oviously) but Zeta Jones, Zellweger and Gere are stunning choices that produce everything you would want and more. Cinematographically this has some real gems and the stage production has been appropriately enhanced for the big screen but without losing its style or impact. Loved every moment of it.

Seems I liked it a lot more than others. It has a few problems but I really liked the editing with the dream sequences and the interplay between them and reality, and of course the music was pretty top notch. Yeah, I can see why it won Best Picture but maybe I'm just a sucker for intelligent use of music in a film.

Hard to really enjoy a movie where the casting is so weak, I didn't enjoy the main cast besides Zeta-Jones and Reilly, and it got even worse during the musical numbers. Still, it's a fun flashy movie that's hard to hate, it passes the time. One other complaint - the musical numbers took place in a different universe, which is a good idea, except they were just straight adaptations from either version of the musical. They rarely affected or commented on the plot.

Most of the actors were unappealing in this. I remember thinking Richard Gere seemed in over his head, and Renee Zellweger just looked awful (too thin). This movie was watchable, but in my opinion the movie Roxie Hart with Ginger Rogers is a better movie based on the same material.

Chicago is one of the great presentations of an over-the-top musical brought to the big screen. It has the feel of a musical done on the stage. The sets feel like they have that movability to them but they are also rich enough to feel real like a film should. The acting and singing in this movie are great. Even some of the smaller roles were played by amazing actors in their own right. The star of this movie is the music. Each track is smart, familiar, and clamps down on your ear like a worm.

I LOVE musicals and Chicago is one of the finest--on par with My Fair Lady. The music is incredible; the performances are stunning; and the story is a lot of fun. Really captures the crime-mania of the era and skewers today's hero-worship and media problems as well.

Some of the actors/dancers were really giving their everything, and some of the imaginary scenes could have some interest. I am pretty neutral-ish to Zeta-Jones usually, but in this one she was on fire with the dance moves. On the other hand, every song bit felt too long to me, half of their runtime were just repeating the same idea over and over. Some of the voices didn't blow me away. I guess it beats Moulin Rouge but not by much

Musically, not bad. The song and dance numbers are entertaining, and sure are plentiful, showing off some impressive cinematography and dizzying editing to make them (of course) the highlights of the film -- it's okay that they're so bombastic, as they indulge in the fantasy worlds of the characters. Otherwise, this is a sickeningly distant and not so clever comment on infamy and its media-savvy effects, with hardly any characters to really latch on to, except maybe Reilly's.

I'll admit at least some of my hate for it is the fact that it's a musical and beat out much better movies for best picture, but even putting that aside it's just not that good. The musical numbers are really out of place at times, Zellweger is annoying and the story is just bad.

Roxie Hart (Renee Zellweger) is a bottled blonde, married to a mechanic (John C Reilly) and having a bit on the side with a travelling salesman (Dominic West), who promises he'll make her a star. When she discovers he's as phoney as baloney, she fills him full of lead. By this time, Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta-Jones) has plugged her little sister for taking her fella to bed. Chicago, 1929, is a city that doesn't hold its passion as well as its liquor.

Chicago is a stylish and fresh (yes, still fresh) musical that lets its showtunes tell the story, instead of being merely the icing on top. That's not to say it doesn't have a bit of self-indulgence, but it flows naturally. Not to mention, Richard Gere and Renee Zellweger are both in top form.

Among the worst films ever made. Evidently shot and cut by blindfolded babboons. The gutless decision to make the songs into musical numbers taking place in the heroine's head is a disastrous one: the film all too often grinds to a halt to allow for too much cute editing between reality and fantasy. Vile.

I don't understand where the hate for this film comes from; I've even heard people who haven't seen it tear it apart simply for winning top prize at the Oscars. Certainly this was a feel-good win for a time when feeling good was in short supply, but Chicago holds up as a showstopping spectacle with an undeniable energy. It'll probably remain Marshall's best work, but that's nothing to shake your head at.

I don't understand how I'm supposed to feel bad about an unjustified murderer, but the movie tries hard to do that. The whole movie is very sexist against men, like it's not a big deal to murder them, or that they all had it coming. I did like the editing, and it had an interesting stlye. The songs were unmemorable. Renee character was an annoying attention whore, kind of like a prototype for Paris Hilton or something. I did like Richard Gere and John C Reilly though. Undeserving best picture.
