An incredible animated film for adults. Perhaps one of my all-time favourites if it wasn't for that rushed ending, which really just snuck up out of nowhere! The journey, however, is certainly worth seeing and revisiting over and over again. Amazing jazz score and great visuals (especially those backing shots of the city) that leave you in awe. Reminded me of great films like Casablanca & Elevator to the Gallows.

Visually, audially and emotionally beautiful. The story works very well despite some cliches, though there are a few points that feel rushed or forced.

A surprise Oscar nominee for Best Animated Feature, but not an undeserving one; two Cuban musicians, a pianist and a singer, have a love affair which runs hot and cold over many years--and make great music in the process. Fascinating animation, at times clunky but always compelling, especially the remarkable dream/fantasy which bridges Havana and New York. A bit thin in narrative terms, but refreshingly bold in its depiction of passion, sex, and violence--physical and emotional. Kudos, Academy.

Stunning visuals, excellent soundtrack, strong voice acting, and of course beautiful hand-drawn artwork unlike any I've seen in a film before. I only wish it was about 25 minutes longer, as certain plot elements later in the film seemed a bit rushed. Overall great film.

I watched most of it with a huge grin on my face. The characters and places burst with life thanks to a unique visual style combining crisp and confident line drawings and bold flat colours, with unrefined background sketches and painterly brushstrokes. Some of the city backdrops in particular are a marvel. The film does have slightly uneven pacing with whirlwind segments and doldrums, but ultimately is greater than the sum of its parts. The music, the voices, the atmosphere, it's just magical.

I fell in love with beautiful visuals. They were done (at least partly) with 3D program but made look like 2D and the colors were boldly flat. The highly detailed backgrounds highlight the stunning atmosphere. Nice soundtrack and voice acting. The story was pretty common, though it fitted to the style, but the end was unnecessarily rushed.

Beautiful pseudo-hand-drawn animation and a great soundtrack add up to a very atmospheric movie. The ending is a bit rushed but otherwise the simple story works.

Visually and musically beautiful, this breathtaking story of love and heartbreak is an emotional journey well worth undertaking.

Animation for grown ups. Though the story is quite regular, taking several predictable turns, this bolero of romantic heartache hits all the right notes when it comes to style, oozing seductively with passion and music. A clear favourite for the "Best Animated"-Oscar.

I hope this gets an Oscar. I really needed to see this beautifully done ode to idealism. The animation is unique, I haven't seen anything like this before - you can almost feel the pulse of the cities, the bursting lights, touch the rhytm... And the love story carries the same ideas as those of Gone with the Wind - Chico and Rita cannot live with or without each other. Beautiful. The ending is, though, a bit unfulfilled; but then again, all that jazz!
