A man grows tired of domesticity and is tempted by an affair with another woman. It sounds cliche, but this is Rohmer, who packs his relatively simple films with such nuance that nothing is typical. The dance of seduction is mesmerizing, constantly taking one step forward and two steps back, building anticipation until the remarkable ending. It's probably the most concise example of the Moral Tales, about assured men who justify and stumble their way through romantic and intellectual crises.

Eric Rohmer can be so ostensibly good and so excruciatingly boring at the same time. Rohmer's characters always chatter ceaselessly and endlessly about their emotions, seldom taking time off in order to express any. While callous and humorless, the dialogue is usually intelligent, but "Chloe" is rife with lines that seem too contrived for realism, and most of it was extremely tedious to watch. What little drama snuck in toward the end was very welcome.

Nearly equals My Night at Maud's. Rohmer ends his saga of morality on a high note.

I get the feeling that my appreciation of Rohmer's work could grow considerably in retrospect. Like Mike Leigh or Cassavetes, he appears to be a filmmaker remarkably capable of depicting realistic details of human behavior, but also like them his style is not necessarily what i would consider "cinematic". Yet this is not necessarily always something that stands in the way of greatness, and time will tell whether or not my opinion of his work grows as it did with theirs.

Another Rohmer film that has aged like fine wine. His directorial style is a refreshing change from modern Hollywood where exposition and drama needs to be hammered into your head with emotive overacting. Here Rohmer does what he does best and allows his characters to explore their emotions, surroundings, and each other. This is about the living breathing colorful Paris of the 70's as much as it is a story of a man resisting desires outside of his married life.

It's a story about a man considering his marriage and having an affair with an old friend who comes into his life. While this could have made for a pretty cookie cutter plot the characters are compelling and there's little of the acting is very good. The dialogue is the key as we get to both see and hear every part of the conflict the main character goes through, up until the really strong ending.

For the first half of this movie, I was really down on it. It felt like a very mundane love affair story with just a few unusual New Wave-y flourishes (I liked the daydream about the device that controls will power). But it took me by surprise and in the end I was satisfied. A minor but pleasing moral tale of temptation and fidelity.
