Summary: In the middle of the Great Depression, when an America in the grips of a devastating economic downturn was nearly brought to its knees, there came along a most unlikely hero who had crowds cheering on their feet as he proved just how hard a man would fight to win a second chance for his family and himself. While it starts off slow and uninteresting, somehow Crowe manages to really sell the film at the end.

Brilliant! Never have I enjoyed a boxing film so much. Really felt for Crowe's character. Would be fasinated to see the real life final fight.

This movie really works because of Giamatti and Crowe are great together. The story is cliched and heavy-handed and with less capable actors it could have easily become a snooze-fest. The story lines revolving around his wife's conflicted emotions and how tough times were financially got old and the movie dragged during these parts in the late stages of the film. Worth a watch for the boxing story (if you like that sort of thing) but not much else.
