If you're interested in anything but obscene levels of gore in your horror just walk away; this laughably inept Fulci flick offers little else. There's a few interesting ideas here and there - the pick axe coffin rescue is kind of neat - but all are shot in such a deliberate manner that there's not even a modicum of suspense. Fans of trashy Italian horror like to point out that the insane kills are the main attraction - a valid point, but what if you fall asleep before you get to the meaty bits?

When it tries, it tries REALLY hard, and it's pretty fucking hysterical for that. Still, there's bits of a legitimately interesting, creepy horror film buried beneath the incessant comical overreaching. Dub is especially shit, but I doubt anyone seeking out Fulci really cares. Frizzi's score is outstanding, even out of context, and you can find the soundtrack album easily if you don't want to actually sit through a Fulci flick.

Seriously, really? Why is Lucio Fulci well regarded? With all due respect to the memory, he couldn't direct one way traffic. The practical effects are ridiculous, the story makes no sense, the reaction shots are hilarious, the overdubbing is atrocious, and it's not even that watchable to make fun of it. Ugh, man, what utter rubbish.

Fulci at his most sublime and ridiculous. A truly unique atmosphere and all the strikingly beautiful gore on display make up for the abrupt, tacked on ending.

fulci reaches into his bag of tricks and pulls out...wait, ummm, nothing? this movie takes about an hour to get moving and once it gets to full speed still doesn't have any real power. the gore factor is cheesy, boring and sparse, and the worst part is the sloppy writing--i'm not exactly sure that this movie made any sense.

Fulci's graphic follow-up to his successful _Zombie_ is just as gory, if not more so, but not as satisfying. Lots of intestine barfing and head drilling. Best scene: George rescuing a prematurely buried MacColl from her sealed coffin, his pickax coming dangerously close to her head as it smashes through the coffin lid.

Gothic zombie flick from the master of gore Lucio Fulci. Story is very basic, just an excuse to show juicy bits. And by juicy bits I mean woman vomiting her intestines out or powerdrill going through the face. Apart from gore, lighting and cinematography plays a big role in my enjoyment of this flick. Cast is good, these actors look like they were born to act in Italian horror. Soundtrack is very enjoyable on its own - a mix of Tangerine Dream-esque synths and Japanese videogame themes.

For all of its artistic failures and obvious plot holes this managed to be one of the only horror films that felt intense and legitimately nightmarish in its presentation for me, a twisted Gothic tale brought to screen. Even for its lack of logic it made a hell of a lot more sense than other films of its kind (including others by Fulci). Most people will find a lot of problems with this, especially the tacked on ending, but I was completely gripped by it.

It's no "Zombi 2" or "The Beyond" but still well worth a watch for the amazing and infamous intestinal purge (the actress actually vomitted sheep entrails) and the drill scene.

Great little piece of art from the Master himself.
Weird in the special and merry Fulci way.
The scenes with the drill and the regurgitation of innards will have you squirming with glee.

One Lucio Fulci's better zombie schlockers, this is a little slow paced but has a handful of simply awesome gore scenes. The bit with Giovanni Radice getting his head impaled on a huge drill press is classic. Sadly, most of the zombies don't show up until almost the very end, and they're not very scary. The climactic fire stunt is particularly unimpressive, but it's still a ton of maggoty fun.

So poorly paced it manages to feel like a 3-hour film. The distinctly Fulci moments of delirium are quite nice, but it takes for-fucking-ever to get to them, and it all lacks the feverish oneiric haze of his more interesting movies. I'm one of the biggest Fulci apologists around and I really struggled through this one.
