Summary: One of the "Censored 11" banned from T.V. syndication by United Artists in 1968 for alleged racism. Saint Peter, seeing that sinful Harlem nightlife is attracting more business to 'Hades Inc.' than to his own 'Pair O' Dise', sends down a group of hep angels to lead souls on to the straight and narrow.
I'm only giving this cartoon this rating for the level of craftsmanship in the animation. This was probably ground breaking in 1937 from a visual standpoint, but that still doesn't overcome its racist connotations.
Has some quality animation in parts, but premise is pretty retarded (Heaven attracts more souls by having a better band than Satan), and it portrays blacks as lazy, gullible and stupid.
Unlike many of the banned/censored Looney Tunes, this one actually IS quite racist, depicting blacks as lazy, absurd-looking buffoons who can't speak English and are obsessed with dice and partying. A shame, because the premise is quite interesting, and the portrayal of Harlem in the 1930s makes it seem like a hip, exciting place. Unfortunately, the racist caricatures are just too much and overwhelm the positive elements of the short.
