The bastard child of Godzilla and Blair Witch delivers solid suspense, characters, scares, and a cool monster. It's such a fundamentally simple film that it's not really worth a lot of analysis or additional viewings, but for a one-time pulse-pounding thrill, it's solid. Also, Lizzy Caplan is my new movie girlfriend and I am in love with her.

The first 15-20 minutes which feel more like a teenage soap-opera than a monster film are annoying to get through but once you do the movie is well worth it. The handy-cam style, if you can stomach it, really adds to the realism of the film. The acting is naturalistic, for the most part, with some minor quips. The film is very well put together and obeys the rule of "what you don't see is far more scary than what you do." Certainly one of the best monster flicks that's come out in a while.

This Movie was my personal surpise 2008...everyone told me this Movie is bad, so I've waited for DVD release. Afterall I was really angry because it might be a great evening in Cinema. I disagree with all negative Criticks.. this one is much better than Rec or other hand camera Flicks. It's really thrilling and creates a great "end of the world" atmosphere. It was my first BlueRay buy, and watched it 3 times by now.

Great suspens movie. It looks like a nightmare in New-york and in the beginning you don't know what happen exactly. Only Americans can make such movies with plenty of visual effects. First I was thinking of 9/11, a sort of terrorist action but then later on we see the creature, 91 meter high, unbelievable !!!

It's amazing when so much technical skill--I'd include the Star Wars prequels here--is coupled to what basically are lousy stories. But I suppose this is the wave of the future--sound and fury signifying nothing.

It was awesome. The monster was really cool and now that I know the story behind it it's just that much cooler. Competent acting and camera work that makes you feel like you're there, along with some inspired scenes (horse and buggy for example) created an incredible atmosphere. I had loads of fun watching this and since it's short it doesn't overstay its welcome.

Reasonably well-done and entertaining for this type of fare. One of the things working in its favour is that the filmmakers were clearly aware that it was a good idea to keep it short. Clearly and shamelessly sets out to capitalize upon both the imagery of the Twin Towers attack and the anxious state of mind of the post-September 11 epoch. The movie does not claim or possess sufficient significance, however, to warrant being terribly offended about this. Those who detest shaky-cam should avoid.

Never before has a monster movie, a genre mostly limited to cheesy effects and big dumb lumbering destruction of models, evoked a feeling of absolute terror. Cloverfield does best in spotlighting the human side of things, far more than any King Kong or kaiju film ever has. It wasn't flawless by any means, but it definitely fit the bill of being what it set out to be and doing it with believability. Also, the 1st person perspective really does work; it isn't shakycam hell like Blair Witch.

Difficult: what do you give a movie that's above average and impresses you by doing so very much with so little? But wait, what if this film also gives you a headache b/c of the most unnecessarily hyperactive use of the shaky-cam ever? I honestly felt a bit nauseous by the end and had to look away from the screen. If you don't mind watching the most dizzying cam ever (many don't &I hear it's more palatable on the small screen) you might want to pop 2 dramamine & "enjoy". And you give it a 75.

All-around decent. The film worked BECAUSE we didn't have the stupid scientist/military expert/genius highschool student telling us how the monster's biology could be turned against it to save the day -- I would've had to shut my brain off. But with this, you don't know what's going on in the beginning, and you still don't know by the end. Excellent. If anything, I would've liked to see LESS of the monster and more of its path-of-carnage. Up the mystery!

Very exciting monster movie. The ending was pretty schmaltzy, but the shots of monster carnage made up for it. Oh and for everyone calling it a Blair Witch ripoff, Blair Witch was itself a blatant (and inferior) ripoff of Cannibal Holocaust.

"Cloverfield" has no soundtrack, no back story, no subplot, no narration. We stay with the group as something attacks Manhattan. Even with the handheld camera gimmick, the production values are impressive. Even at a brisk 82 minutes, "Cloverfield" comes close to wearing out its welcome. And some of the hand-heldshots defy the conceit of the film, unless somebody taped the camera to his head. Nevertheless, I had a lot of fun with this inside-out take on the monster movie.

Textbook example of good idea, bad execution. Good idea: A giant monster movie, from the perspective of normal people caught in the middle. Bad execution: Those people are self-absorbed caricatures of millennials - impossible to sympathize with, even and especially as a member of that generation. There were a sprinkling of interesting moments, mostly to do with the monster, and flares of characterization and humor. But there have been so many better personal-monster-experience movies made since.

Once in a great while, a film will grab me, shake me, surprise me and not allow me to forget it. "Cloverfield" is one of the movie experiences you don't forget. There's something very human about it - the filming technique, the characters, and the quick glimpses of terror. Extraordinarily clever marketing aside, the filmmakers actually deliver a product better than anything a preview could tease us with. I loved this movie, it's an easy early choice for one of the best films of the new year.

I am all for Cloverfield, which possesses one of the best viral marketing campaigns I have ever seen. This flick begins my celebrity crush on Odette Yustman, who I put on-par (at least) with Megan Fox in the looks department. The 'shaky'-camera work was brilliant (though I often am not impressed with the style), and it sports an inspired, brilliant monster design, concept & execution. The scene with the white horse and buggy legitimately gave me chills. A very complete film with no fatal flaws.

Not a particular good movie, but the experience of watching it at a cinema boosted the score a bit. It's completely terrifying at moments. Some audience members prone to migraines have cited the film as a trigger due to the (intentionally) shaky camera work, I can only wish that I had been so lucky to have taken such a headache as this may have given the film the final nail in the coffin which would have allowed me to turn it off before the finish.

It's certainly a unique monster movie. Thecamcorder style filming was done well, and immerses the audience. There are scenes that are extremely tense, there's a lot of humor, and the filming gives it a strong sense of realism. But honestly, even though it did everything right, it needed more monster. There are great scenes, but theyre separated by stretches of shaky running and cowering in dust. Cloverfield is as good as can be expected for its concept, I'm just not sure the concept worked.

A thriller that explores how we increasingly view horror through the remove of a visual medium. If some called its appropriation of 9/11 imagery exploitative, that's only because it's so effective. Unlike the other horror blockbuster to have done so recently (War of the Worlds), Cloverfield at least has the courage of its convictions. It ends the only way it could, yet it tempers its nihilism with the notion that the accumulation of small moments of happiness can stave off the approach of hell.

If Godzilla channeled the nuclear anxiety of post-Hiroshima Japan, Cloverfield uses as its inspiration the chaotic, fractured media coverage of 9/11 to strike horror into audiences. (It's surely no coincidence that the lead is moving to Japan.) It's even bolder than Spielberg's War of the Worlds, and while that film considered the incomprehensibility of tragedy on a massive scale, Cloverfield hits you with personal loss. Not bad for a 73-minute creature feature.

Cloverfield's strengths are its unrelenting pace, action and fun. It's well shot and for the most part the cast do okay in terms of their performances. The film does have a real feel of dread & anticipation about it. It's a shame it has two major weakness. First is the blander than bland "Dawson Creek-esq" cast, who are solid enough actors, but are boring people. Second is the disappointing end sequence. The final 15 minutes or so are misjudged & seem out of context to the rest of the film.

Pretty good considering it's a foundfootage film. While that's a dead genre by now, Cloverfield is one of the few foundfootage movies with great visual effects and a story that keep you interested and wondering throughout its short runtime. Supposedly all shot through the lens of one of the characters' compact digicam, Cloverfield is a novel hybrid genre movie: Blair Witch Project meets monster flick. It works; fast-paced, high on thrills and scares, great fx. Sadly, it's also geared towards the lowest common denom. in that it's a love story and populated with preppy kids with zero character, pretty to look at but interchangeably boring - the fodder type. I guess with a winter-blockbuster some things are a given. It's still good.

In the short time Cloverfield is on the screen, it manages to do pretty much everything it needs to. It doesn't waste time, clocking in under 90 minutes, but it makes use of almost every second. The shaky-cam doesn't usually break the immersion level, and the acting is quite good, especially because they actors are mostly a group of unknowns. Pretty much the only JJ Abrams thing I've enjoyed because it was short and made the yuppies out to be idiotic objects of hate, rather than clumsily trying to make you empathize with them. Abrams CANNOT do characters beyond stock types, however most of the attention is on the special effects which were impressive in 2008. Hopes were high for this mysterious marketing behemoth. No one really knew what Cloverfield was about but everyone wanted to see it. Without a doubt, Cloverfield lives up to its lofty expectations and in most ways exceeds them. One of the most refreshing and unique movies in decades, Cloverfield takes monster movies to new heights by using a level of realism unseen in virtually any movie before it. It will be hard not to remember this vividly for years. It's truly remarkable.

It should be a 30 minute short-film. The handy-cam shooting is interesting for about the first 20 minutes, then it just wears on you. Unless you feel really compelled to see this movie, find something better to watch.

All the hype surrounding this film actually lived up to expectations. If you can get past the constant camera movement (think Blair Witch Project with double the shakiness) and underdeveloped characters, you will get a suspenseful monster flick that delivers with jolts of excitement and fearful fun.

Liked it more the second time around. Some camera shots are unbelievable at times but it doesn't make it terrible. Worth the watch.

A fun popcorn flick. It could have been more worthwhile if the dialogue and acting wasn't so awful and the characters weren't so painfully thin, but those aspects are simply much more apparent with a movie that is filmed in a realistic manner. In fact, at times the visuals were almost eerily practical. Other times, not so much. That said, I think this movie would be incredibly enjoyable in, say, IMAX format.

Normally I don't care that much for POV movies, nor sci-fi alien movies, but man, this was well written, well acted, and very well executed! - Very Good.

Really good monster film but be warned that it may make you sea sick. Still, builds up the suspense really well but let down by a weak CGI monster.

Surprisingly good. The way it's filmed makes it a very real experience for the audience. Much more than a Blair Witch style clone. Very good stuff indeed.

Somewhat confusing to start with with some fantastical moments. Maintains humor throughout without sacrificing action and tension. In your face scenes and builds up nicely toward the end.
