If the story was told a little more coherently, if Kinski would have stepped back just a little bit, this one would be as great as other Herzog/Kinski collaborations. Don't get me wrong, Cobra Verde is a great movie but sometimes it appears as it might just be a Kinski-Show which is wonderfully staged by Herzog. 25/07/09

Despite excellent cinematography, and an amazing final scene, this film has awful dialogue, terrible dubbing, a plot that is at best synoptic and very thin characterisation. I think I must be missing something.

Somehow Herzog and Kinski naturally make me care about the plight of a slave trader and make me feel sad for him at the end. That's a hell of an achievement. The film itself is a bit mismatched, but Kinski's performance is perhaps his wildest and most rage-filled. He terrifies me.

Contains some of Herzog's best photography, and Kinski is his maniacal great self. But the meandering story left me cold. Also, I kept noticing little production flaws that started to really bug me, like the poor performances by the extras. I guess there were just way too many clear shots of them, but I constantly noticed phony choreography, stilted gestures and glances at the camera. Maybe they needed better coaching. The dancing girls also bugged the hell out of me. Eh, I dunno.

Kinski doesn't ever go for broke the way he does in his other Herzog collaborations, and the movie falters slightly for it, but the cinematography is stunning, and the character of Cobra Verde complex and beautiful.

A strange, horribly dubbed epic from West Africa, starring a wild-eyed Klaus Kinski as the right man at the wrong time and place. Arch-typically Herzogian with its exotic setting, stunning cinematography, confusing plot, and iron-willed protagonist, but despite that, Cobra Verde is anything but predictable. It's pretty scary, actually. I don't know how accurate it is, but I've never seen a culture crash depicted so chillingly. Highly recommended if you're a Herzog fan, which you should be.

Although it shares similar themes to Aguirre and is not quite as good, Cobra Verde is a very unique movie, with a unique setting - the slavery route between Dahomey and Brazil. It's a majestic production quite astounding for a German budget, it's engrossing and gorgeous (the authentic West-African music is especially wonderful), and it almost completely deromanticizes the Adventure genre. I actually thought the main character didn't work as well as it could have, but that's about the only flaw.

The photography is great, Herzog is great, Popol Vuh provides another excellent score, Kinski gives another driven and intense performance...par for the course. It's no Aguirre or Fitzcarraldo but it's still a great movie, with a nice epic feel to it and bold, memorable period imagery.

A gorgeous and epic tale from Herzog. Kinski (as always) is fantastic as another enraged lunatic. The tribal music in this is amazing, the scene where Kinski watches the young girls performance is touching. This contrasted with the epic scale is a fantastic formula for a very memorable film.

A second viewing made this a better film to me, and it further crept up subconciously and improved even more. There are strange and magical sequences, unusual characters, beautiful cinematography, and it features a lovely subtle musical score by Popol Vuh. The movie takes its time with the story, but it's a rewarding experience. Knowing that this is the last film Herzog made with Kinski, and one of Kinski's last films period, makes the ending even more poignant.

As is to be expected, Kinski is amazing and film is gorgeous. The story (probably intentionally) is kind of meandering and haphazard, though, and makes it less compelling for me than Fitzcarraldo or Aguirre, which both feature very driven and focused plots and characters. The final shot of this film is incredible.

Lacks the focused plots of Aguirre and Fitzcarraldo, so it never completely captured my interest. However, it has a fantastic hypnotic quality in it's photography and lingering shots, particularly in the beginning and towards the end. The parts with the female rebels, and the last 30 minutes overall for that matter, are incredible, and the final scene was breathtaking. Not enough good can ever be said about Kinski's acting.
