Summary: Collaborator portrays formerly successful writer, Robert Longfellow, who visits his childhood home in LA to scope out a script doctoring job, but he’s really searching for a kind of ignition that’s eluding him in middle-age. He contacts his old flame, Emma Stiles, in an attempt to rekindle their heated romance. However, fireworks come from unexpected quarters in the form of Gus, the alcoholic, ex-con neighbor, who’s still living at home and ever ready to swill beers and catch up on old times. This writing and directing debut by actor Martin Donovan starts of a bit boring and without much sense of direction, but when the main protagonist, a writer with a slipping career, gets taken hostage by his war-veteran neighbour, the script get a lot more tense and interesting. In spite of that, Collaborator fails to engage the viewer with more than some preachy dialogues between the actors and a romance angle by an ex-girl friend. It's not bad, but it could have been a lot more appealing.
