Summary: The true story of a man who posed as director Stanley Kubrick during the production of Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut, despite knowing very little about his work and looking nothing like him.
Have to agree with the other comments that the first third is interesting, but after that it doesn't really offer anything new. The few places where they have the actors addressing the camera feel very out of place.
The opening sequences are great but 30 minutes later it burns out and turns into mediocre film, even the outstanding performance by Malcovich cannot stop it.
Great concept, poor execution. If not for the presence of John Malkovich this film would be an absolute waste. As it is, it's a decent comedy that drags in the middle and completely runs out of gas towards the end.
Tedious. It's a one-note idea that runs dry pretty quickly, and the only truly remarkable aspect of the entire production is John Malkovich. I found myself annoyed by all the blatant tongue-in-cheek references to Kubrick's filmography.
besides remaining short of breath story wise, the art direction is very overwhelming. casting is great, loved to see those little material details here or there that made malkovich's character one of a kind. if anything, he is not ordinary looking, nor average height!
I've got great expectations for this film, but the execution was surprisingly lame. Malkovich is a good actor. I just don't understand why they choose that "out of color" scenes and way to shoot them. Pacing and the structure of the story fails greatly. It's shame, since the story could be worth to tell.
