Another beautiful and mesmerising short from Stan Brakhage with the motif of water. Said to have been a last tribute to nature from Brakhage when he had to undergo cancer surgery, although he would live until 2003, it would have been perfect final work.
Capturing the refracted light in water and in containers, this is an astonishingly beautiful film. It was meant as a last tribute from Brakhage to the natural world which leaves him in awe in case he didn't live through bladder cancer surgery the next day. What a tribute! Looking at nature as if it is something alien, seeing the light bounce and swirl, looking at the world we so take for granted in ways we'd never thought of.
As much as I love some of Brakhage's work, I must admit that a lot of his films bleed together in my memory. But this one has always stuck with me. Such wonderful, stunning technique, a breathtaking work of beauty.
On the "By Brakhage: An Anthology" DVD there's an interview in which Brakhage admits that this film grew out of him wanting to test a new camera before the warranty ran out. As such, this is even more random than usual for Brakhage, but I still enjoyed seeing it
