Summary: Claude Massoulier is murdered while hunting at the same place than Julien Vercel, an estate agent that knew him and whose fingerprints are found on Massoulier's car. As the police discovers that Marie-Christine Vercel, Julien's wife, was Massoulier's mistress, Julien is very suspected. But his secretary, Barbara Becker, while not quite convinced he is innocent, defends him and leads her private investigations... (imdb)

A pretty confusing detective story, the film as a whole is pretty dry. There's very little of Truffaut's charm and it's not anywhere as Hitchcockian as it pretended to be. Truffaut's last effort has a few neat moments that will send one back to his better films but overall it's just really forgettable.

At first I thought this was a throwback to something like the *Thin Man* series, but the film actually reminds me more of 70s/80s detective-romance TV series like *Hart to Hart*. The leads didn't really have great chemistry, imo, and the acting seemed, well, on par with a detective TV shows. The film also has a TV production values, which I didn't really care for.

The way the mystery unfolds is confusing, and in the end somewhat unsatisfying. The film keeps returning to the real estate office... over and over again. Hitchcock knew to either keep things moving to build excitement, or keep it all in one location to maintain a claustrophobic tension. But you can't have it both ways. It's like a train grinding to a halt every 5 minutes. Despite this, the film is certainly worth watching for those wonderful little Truffaut moments.
