Not among my favourite Rohmer's, but still absolutely lovely boasting all the usual positive attributes of Rohmer's work; great dialogue, well-crafted and believable characters, a pleasant understated beauty to the photography (in this regard Spring really suits the film). For some reason Florence Darel's character here made me think of a slightly older version of Anne-Laure Meury's character in The Aviator's Wife.

Rohmer's sensibility gains a philosophic complexity, that doesn't affect his characters' affection and impressions on love and pain. The dialogues have a kind of depth -- which is not self-absorbed -- that you cannot find in an american movie.

I've seen films where people fall in love with nary a word and you buy it. In a Rohmer film, they yap about it for hours and you don't. Some of the dialogue in Springtime is excellent, actually, but not when it's about emotions or philosophy (he never could help philosopher namedropping), two areas where the superficial text and the across-the-board lukewarm acting compromise the film's realism. The characters aren't very likable or believable. His subsequent "Tale of Winter" is much better.

A very simple yet wonderful story about two women who meet by chance and spend a few weeks together as friends. Rohmer is a wonderful writer, not only in writing interesting discussions but in creating multifaceted characters and conveying the awkwardness of real human relationships.
