I loved it. Far darker and more mysterious than all the other fairy-tale kind off animation movies nowadays. This is something totally different, a whole other dimension brought into the story and I loved it. Great amusing characters, a weird but just awesome story and a mysteriousness we don't see that often. Great stopmotion animation!
A lot darker than I expected, but to its benefit. Even if the story isn't your thing, the visuals alone are worth the price of admission. Who would pass up a chance to see an animated Van Gogh painting in 3D?
The pacing's a little off, but I was too busy enjoying the film's flirtation with genuine darkness to care. The 3-D felt neither gimmicky nor superfluous, which is a rare feat.
Selick's film boasts a captivating melancholic mood and wildly imaginative, frequently contorted animation, coupling its thoughtful Neil Gaiman story with great cinematic moments. The most negative thing to say about Coraline is that it could have done with a bigger ending. Waiting for a moment akin to the finale of Monster House, I was surprised that there wasn't a big face-off/destruction of the villain to cap the movie. Still, a damn good animation, outshining the overrated Up.
Charming, witty, creepy, imaginative, and every other adjective you could associate with Neil Gaiman ring true in Henry Selick's stop-motion adaptation. Selick chooses the perfect medium to accentuate Gaiman's grotesque oddity and builds a great cast to bring his characters and world to life.
This is a wonderful movie for children, featuring a world ripe with hidden secrets and curious oddities. Unfortunately the enchantment is missing the humour of similar titles, and falls apart in the third act when it fails to go dark enough. Overall a fantastic effort, with great voice acting, and some truly magical scenes (the opening in particular) that comes together as a good movie, but can't quite grasp greatness.
I was entirely intrigued while watching this movie. Then it was over & I thought "huh... well what was the point?" Then I couldn't stop thinking about it during the next day! I'm still not sure what "the message" was supposed to be, but felt there was one, so maybe the point was that we each draw our own conclusions. The animation, music and voices are all great. The film is a tad on the creepy/disturbing side, but nothing you wouldn't expect from Selick. Definitely Recommended!
Visually exciting but there's no sense of danger or tension for most of the latter half. It could have been better plotwise, but I absolutely enjoyed watching it.
Beautifully animated, wonderfully creepy, and refreshingly original. It's the perfect antidote to saccharine children's fare that emphasizes funny talking animals over actual mood and substance. Well worth any animation fan's time.
Very powerful and lively animation and a story that has the right amount of creepyness. I consider this a good movie for children because they like to be scared.
The animation is impressive, most of the characters were interesting, and most of the voice acting was good. However, I found Fanning's voice acting incredibly irritating and exaggerated at times which caused me to dislike the protagonist as a result. The story wasn't exceptionally interesting either but it's handled well. Overall, a good watch, but it has its flaws.
I liked nightmare and corpse bride, but this one was just boring to me. Something about the animation didn't look that great to me, and the story was just whatever. It seemed too outlined.
