This was really hard to rank: for the most part it was a psychological film about two men, but in the end Daves let's You think it was all about the daily life of cowboys. Nethertheless the two performances were great - especially Lemmon.

An effective--and unusual--western about a couple of tenderfeet.

*Spoilers* What begins as a standard B-Western (with an admittedly unlikely starring duo) becomes a compelling examination of ethics and morality in the American Western. Both Ford and Lemmon are excellent, with an unusually cast Lemmon surprisingly playing his role completely straight. An unconvincing romantic subplot that goes nowhere and is abruptly dropped is a debit, and the final recounciliation between the two leads feels false, otherwise a finely produced and directed western entry.

Total failure. Even Saul Bass's title sequence is far worse than any other of his I have seen
