Summary: A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys are all that stand in their way. (imdb)
Definitely one of the most disappointing films of 2011. Should have been way more fun. I think it suffered from Snakes on a Plane effect. Everyone read that title, saw Samuel L. Jackson was in it, & built expectations from there. Cowboys & Aliens title+Favreau+Daniel Craig+Harrison Ford sounded like a genre nerd's dream of an epic. The result was just way too serious & a little flat.
Most people stated that this was a cowboy movie, and I can understand why they said that. So, I was expected less aliens than it actual had. It wasn't a movie that I would want to buy and keep (watch on netflix), but it was still enjoyable for have a mixture of both genres into one.
It's exactly what you expect it to be and doesn't try to be anything else greater than the sum of its really very meager parts! For that at least it gets the thumbs up. If your happy to suspend logic and brains for 100 minutes then the solid action and adequate performances will entertain just enough.
Very disappointing. Follows the modern trend (Orci and Kurtzman) of just chucking way too much in for the film to ever be coherent. Just counting how many character relationships Harrison Ford is meant to have is enough to keep you distracted. Three son figures, three authority rivals - at least he was spared a love interest. He isn't even the lead! Could and should have been much, much better.
Uninspired, but at least for the first half it's entertainingly absurd. The Sci-fi elements are pretty badly executed, though, and by the end it just becomes a chore of explosions and trite dramatic moments.
This was slow to get going, but once it did, especially in the second half, it really impressed me! Daniel Craig was a great lead for this, Harrison Ford too, and there is plenty of mind-blowing Action scenes along with some comedy thrown in too. It's a very original concept never done before, and the special effects were just amazing. The final scenes is where it really takes off though, giving us one hell of an entertaining film that covers enough genres to please just about anyone :)
More like "Western Cliches vs. Generic Action Movie". Daniel Craig's acting is strong, and the cinematography is excellent, but the script is frustratingly unimaginative. (Also, I'm not sure anyone told Sam Rockwell that they were making a Western.)
This movie is part western and part alien invasion. The movie does not really do anything new with either genre. The cast is fine especially Sam Rockwell. The story is predictable but it has some fun moments.
This film starts VERY slow. Infact, in both the extended version and the uncut version, I failed to find nor follow the story until close to the 1:45 mark. Then the film takes off with a real plot and intriguing style that finally, drew me in.
Going into this film I had guessed that we would see classic cowboy archtypes and classic alien archtypes. That is to say, little grey men and flying saucers. Why did they bother inventing this new alien race? It would have been satisfying to see some 4 foot aliens murdered towards the end of the film. Perhaps such a scene wouldn't have made it into a PG13 film, though.
Riddled with lame cliches and an insanely predictable plot, I watched this with my old man and the two of us were having more fun predicting{rather accurately, in fact} the shitty plot than enjoying the movie itself. Personally, I think the fact they made such a ridiculous concept as boring as it was is more of an accomplishment than making it fun to watch. I mean hell, they made Harrison Ford a completely boring character in this movie. How in the hell do you do that!!??
For any adult who has seen any kind of variety of film, this will leave a bad taste in their mouth. Main characters abilities and weaknesses are inconsistent and conveniently for certain plot points to occur, cookie cutter action movie sequences abound right down to former rivals nodding at each other in the middle of battle when one saves the other. Where Avatar relied on designed aliens to look appealing to assist the audience in caring, aliens' here hope to work like arcade games.
