A fair Jackie Chan movie that's carried by the cinematography.

A slightly lesser version of Jackie's earlier "Police Story" films; a solid mix of kung fu with stylish Hong Kong gangster action. Still, I feel like it was missing some elements; the pacing was off, some scenes feature JC painfully overacting (including a cringe-worthy crying scene), and the story itself is quite basic and straightforward. Solid, entertaining stuff, and the final fight scene is incredible, but it could have been much more.

Many Jackie Chan movies are tonally inconsistent, with brief periods of brilliance popping up amidst all the absurdity. You stop laughing and marvel for a bit, and then it's gone. This one is far less easy to pin down; it constantly oscillates between the usual absurdity and the kind of heady, cold-neon urban visions you'd expect from the best of the American 80s crime movies. I mean, half the time it's downright gorgeous, and the 7-11 section is pure genius in terms of direction. Who knew?

Jackie Chan's most serious movie. Also his most exciting. Beware English-dubbed prints, at least one of which renders all this quite silly
