Summary: An unsuspecting, disenchanted man finds himself working as a spy in the dangerous, high-stakes world of corporate espionage. Quickly getting way over-his-head, he teams up with a mysterious femme fatale. (imdb)
Good. Extreme corporate espionage is the theme of this twist-laden future thriller. Well directed, written and performed with a very satisfying conclusion. My only problem is with the veeery last scene, cringe-worthily 80'ish sentimental drop of poop at the very end which thankfully doesn't detract from an otherwise fine film but forced me to cut off 10 from my score. Recommended.
This well crafted cyberpunk thriller excels at playing with identity and how we choose to define it. Our brainwashed protagonist drifts through the world of corporate espionage like an empty slate, a bumbling rube whose only appreciable characteristics are his leisure pursuits: cigarettes, single malt whisky, sailing exotic locales. He is a mirror of our own conceits, of a lifestyle obsessed culture that, once its layers have been stripped away, leave nothing but void.
"Natali can't be bothered to fashion an actual human story around the perpetually buzzing toys and non-stop backstabbing and double-crossing." - Ed Gonzalez
Solid science fiction spy thriller that has a brilliant first half. I feel they went too far in making everything tie up in a satisfying conclusion, when in reality they could and should have done something more interesting that would have done the premise justice.
Totall Recall meets The Game meets The Matrix. Vincenzo Natali has always been very good with sound design, lighting, and camera work, with an odd dabble in special effects being his trademark flourish. Unfortunately this minimalistic sci-fi tale is a bit too sparse on concrete facts, with every ethereal element of the story tiptoed around a touch too carefully. The plot branches out like a probability tree left to grow wild, which is not very satisfying. Style over substance, not enough heart.
Should be called, "How to take an interesting idea and execute it poorly". It may have limited funds at its disposal, but that does not justify the transparent acting and plotlines. To be fair, the movie started out well, and hooked my interest. I could also see the director desperately trying to retain some cinematic 'style'. Still left me high and dry though.
Weird. And quite disturbing. However this films starts of very good and immediately grabs the attention, it kind of stagnated afterwards. Liked the idea and liked Northam and Liu, but absolutely hated the ending.
The DVD sat on my shelf for ages but I finally got around to watching this and am glad I did... low budget, but used well, with real plot twists not the predictable 'twist' of many a much more advertised movie... but nicely you can work out the final reveal (and feel all chuffed that you did) if you pay attention to the clues. Much better than I would have guessed and well worth a watch as the slow build-up draws you into the mystery...
Nice premise that's well used. The twist in the end is seen from miles away and acting could've used some boost. Northam and Liu were good, but the rest mediocre at best.
