Good premise, and it was well played out, but it was really just getting going good when it fizzled out at the end when people just turned good all of a sudden. Worth noting that for the first time, Marisa Tomei didn't seem like she was going to bitch out as soon as they said "cut".

Convincingly managing shifts in tone that would have spelled disaster for most movies, "Cyrus" is part pitch-black comedy, part (melo)drama. Hill and Reilly, taking a refreshing step away from fart jokes, bring out the best in each other in a story about family ties, Freudian relations, love, loss, happiness and deep depression. There are no major revelations to be had here, but the Duplass brothers show maturity and a rare willingness to infuse mainstream cinema with off-hand weirdness.

I liked the movie overall, but I was exceptionally impressed with Jonah Hill. I always thought he was funny but rather one dimensional actor. This movie showed me a glimpse of what we will, hopefully, see from him in the future. A more subtle brand of comedy mixed with dramatic sequences that seem to actually challenge an actor instead of just a bunch of jokes connected by a thin veneer of a plot. Kudos to him and everyone else involved in this film.

The Duplass bros. manage to temper these two comedic actors' typical sociopathy with actual humanity, and the result is something not only more honest but painful and funny, too. Jonah Hill is terrifying. If its running time weren't padded out by like a dozen montages and the dialogue in the confrontation scenes didn't spell out everything, this could have been really good rather than a mild success.

I went into it expecting 'Step Brothers 2' but instead got a weird and at times realistic dramatic black comedy. Not great, but good.

'Cyrus' has a lot of buildup, and I mean a lot of buildup---to the point where John C. Reilly and Jonah Hill start budding heads a little too late in the game. I will admit I did enjoy several moments of 'Cyrus,' but so much opportunity and potential fell through the cracks. What we have left is a mildly amusing indie that should very well have taken its proceedings further and faster. It really could have been something.

Not too shabby. It's always a pleasant surprise to see actors work well outside of their normal confines. I'm usually easily annoyed by Hill, but he and Reilly worked well together. Not bad at all.

For once Reilly is a bit off his game and why Molly would ever fall for the needy and downright depressing John character is beyond believable (which is probably why the script doesn't even try to explain it). Does have some tender moments of black comedy, though.

What a delightfully strange movie. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that you've never seen a mother/son relationship quite like the one between Tomei and Jonah Hill have here. I would have liked to find out more about exactly HOW they got to be this way, but ultimately it doesn't matter. At times adorable and sweet with a proclivity for turning creepy and weird within seconds. Some real laugh-out-loud moments before it fumbles the ball just a bit with a conventional, yet satisfying, ending.

It was a bit average. It's rather slow and meandering for the first hour and only in the last 30 minutes does any real conflict occur and it's all tied together in the end with a hasty resolution. All of this makes for a bit of an unsatisfying experience. It was probably better than it would've been if it had been a straight Hollywood comedy about the same subject though.

No one can accuse the filmmakers of forcing any jokes here. Laid back, but always careful, all of the humor here is a natural outgrowth of some pretty well delineated characters, who r brought 2 life by some quality actors. Although the approach is 2 understated to b hysterical, it makes 4 an unusually thoughtful comedy that takes a situation that could easily play out in a 1000 contrived ways, but makes sure it never does. In a lot of ways this is the anti-Sandler.

Starts out very promisingly with a great portrait of a loser finally striking it lucky. Then the black comedy is introduced to good effect. However, as the story goes on, the quirky characters all become more conventional and conformist, and going for the straight, sweet ending doesn't really work after the earlier cynicism. Perhaps if Cyrus and Greenberg had pooled their resources, they might have had enough material for one really great film about dysfunctional loners finding rebirth.

Funny and interesting and it's great to see the Duplass brothers break through to the big time. I loved the dynamics of both the John C. Reilly/Jonah Hill and Marisa Tomei/Jonah Hill relationships, although I will say there may be a bit too much emphasis on John C. Reilly and Marisa Tomei's rather cinematically conventional relationship at the expense of the more unique ones around it.

Excellent movie by the Duplass brothers. A silent and patient story about 3 different persons and their problems in live. It's some kind of a love story but never felt like those cliche flicks with all those stereotypes, which are the reason for hundrets of bad romance movies.

I know the description makes it sound like a high-concept mainstream comedy, but the Duplass brothers stay true to their mumblecore roots by basically keeping it a realistic, subdued drama, none of which is contrived enough to qualify as joking. The catch is Cyrus, who is a "wtf" character and provides many "wtf" moments. Tomei and Reilly's constrained acting wraps it in a shroud of believability, which only serves to accentuate the jarringly odd and disturbing character of Cyrus.

I think I sort of agree with David Denby's review in the New Yorker. A bit torn about this one. It felt a little tame, while at the same time I appreciated its lack of flashiness. And I think the way it was shot was good. Still, I've seen this story before. I dunno, I liked a lot about it, but it just wasn't that engaging I guess. Well-acted all around.

I think this movie should've been called awkward because that is exactly how I felt watching it. It's weird, it's uncomfortable and it's definitely NOT a comedy (as many sites classify it). The only time I really laughed was when it ended and I saw the other people in the theater equally as confused/dissapointed. Oh, that and watching a couple storm out 35 minutes into the film (first time I ever see that).

I could start every review with this sentence, but here it goes. The marketing on this movie was really off. It has funny moments, but it's slightly funny and slightly moving, but doesn't really transcend in either category. The performances are really good though. It's kind of a second rate indie dramedy, but still worth watching if you love you some John C. Reilly. And who doesn't.

I am now in love with Marisa Tomei ... other than that I was very positively surprised by 'Cyrus'. The trailer focused a lot on the comical part of the spat between son and stepfather. But the balance between comic and natural seriosity gave it that final notch from 'alright' to 'good'. I thought Jonah Hill (Cyrus) would be a largely farcical character, but found him anything but. In the end it depicts the universal problem stepfather vs. kid, and does so with wits and versatility.

Not what I was expecting, but all-in-all a pleasant surprise. "Cyrus" turned out to be an unusually offbeat and dark comedy, well performed by the three central cast members. It feels a little lightweight in the middle, and perhaps lacks a little bit of development plot wise, but even so there are some good laughs and surprisingly some quite touching scenes throughout this movie. Not bad.

Finally, the Duplass brothers mature a bit and make a GREAT film. Loved everything about it. Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly avoid the slapstick comedy completely and nail their roles. This is expected out of Reilly as he has been fantastic in many great roles, but Jonah Hill really proved that he can give a great performance.

Tomei is fine as always (referring to both looks and acting) but this movie belongs to Reilly and Hill. They play off each other very well. Not nearly as many laughs as I would've thought or liked. Reilly and Hill were great (Tomei wasn't bad either), but the story just kind of wandered around and didn't really go anywhere original. Cyrus is a fun, fast flick with a great cast and an enjoyable premise, it's also the Duplass bros best effort to date. The tension between Reilly and Hill is amazing and Tomei is once again charming as hell in this little story about a man and woman and her 22 year-old son who wants her all by herself... It developes slowly and great in the the first 2/3 of the movie but it rushes it in the last part and what could have ended as a great little film, turns out to be an allright little film about moving on and letting go of the ones you love.

Maris Tomei and John C. Reilly are great in this, but this is really Jonah Hill's movie. His character is so unsettling and frightening that I found myself cowering at certain moments as if this were a horror movie. Where most films would have been lazy and revealed the malice in obvious and cartoonish ways, Cyrus builds tension slowly and methodically to allow maximum impact in its climax.

"Edgy" indie comedy by the brothers Duplass ("mumblecore" movers and shakers, makers of Baghead among others), the premise of which would be just as easy to imagine as a mainstream Will Ferrell vehicle. The writing is nowhere as slick and glib as it would have had to be in the mainstream, going more for awkwardness and discomfort than for mirth.

Reminded me of dirty rotten scoundrels with the two men competing over the woman. Uses the painfully awkward type of humour. And like the best humour it turns on a serious ending of humanity. Grew on me as it went on. I expected Reilly to be brilliant, but so were Hill and Tomei.

Cyrus threatens to be many things - silly comedy, serious melodrama, tense chiller, breezy romance - but stutters on all avenues, seemingly happy to tease with possibility rather than follow through and deliver. It's as watchable (if a little more mainstream) as most of the Duplass' stuff, although as a viewer, having everything wrapped up all so neatly at the end after such a long build up has you questioning what the point of it all was.

This is a very subtle film - the comedy is almost all awkward-related aka cringe-y type comedy, but not too over the top, in your face. Its quirky, its somewhat low key and it appealed to me. I liked the characters and I felt Jonah Hill and John C. Reilly got along quite well on screen. I found some scenes quite funny but its not a permanently laugh out loud film.
