editing lets it down for me

Not bad, but by Sidney Lumet's standards I consider this a dud. It's the most overtly political movie of a director who was always political. Doctorow's is a thinking man's script - many of his ideas about the Rosenberg affair ring true - but get lost in translation to affecting cinema, especially for us youngins who need a tighter presentation to immerse ourselves in the film's world than people like Lumet who were reading about this in the papers for decades.
