With a very low budget and rushed production it's not surprising Caro's solo debut falls short of it's premise. If not thrilled, Dante 01 at least managed to keep me captivated especially with the visual style. Christianity references got lost on me as usual, the ending sucks big time. I'm still hoping to see something groundbreaking from Caro in the future.
Once again Caro demonstrates his skills for making great visuals on a low budget. Unfortunately the story is bad and the Christ references are a little to obvious in a movie that doesn't make a hole lot of sense.
This had the same feeling as Andromeda Strain. Both started out promising, but was ultimately destroyed with terrible plotholes.
[SPOILER] In order to get manual control of the ship, you have to go to the prisoner's quarters and go through coolant? What was up with the psychedelic ending?
From what I gather, it's all one big christian metaphor, glorifying Jesus's sacrifice. It's too bad, it had good potential and had good visuals, but ultimately it was shallow and ruined by religion.
Dante 01 is a film that leaves the audience with questions. Questions like why did this and that happen? Why is the emergency system reboot located past the prison section through a compartment that is liable to become flooded with boiling liquid? And, perhaps the most loaded question of all, what the hell have I just seen? There's Christ allegories in there, I can tell you that much, but aside from that this movie is simply confusing. Stellar camera work done on a low budget though.
Full of logic holes and weird for the sake of weird. Character motivations for a lot of the film came out of no where, and a lot of the plot and script seems to have been kept in the writers head. And the ending is just.........wtf.
But it's French, so not that surprising. Has some good performances in it but not one to hunt out
