There are some visual elements that The Matrix appears to have directly lifted, but I'm amazed at the number of people who think this was superior. Everyone besides William Hurt is bad, especially Kiefer. The concept as a whole is just... well try to articulate it out loud and you'll see what I mean. Also I'd like to meet someone who can defend the telekinesis fight, that was spectacular.

Style. That is what this film was for me. The sets and general art direction shine through in this ominous feature. Nice to see where its usually the humans not quite understanding how the aliens/visitors go about life that the roles have been swapped here.
