Summary: A chic, good-looking and suitably 70's couple arrive at an extravagant and deserted seaside hotel after eloping. Stefan is wealthy and happily English, with a hidden streak of sadism, while Valarie is intelligent but of inferior (Swedish) blood. To keep her with him at the eerie hotel he lies consistantly about his relationship with his mother and his plans to tell her of their marriage. Meanwhile he has mysterious phone conversations with an older, dominant and pampered sissy. Two fresh guests arrive; the Hungarian countess, Elizabeth Bathory and her voluptuous protege, Ilona.(imdb)

A newlywed couple staying at a remote European manor are slowly seduced by a pair of lesbian vampires. It's actually a lot classier than that sounds, as tension builds gradually and the couple are drawn deeper under the erotic spell of the blood drinkers as the nights pass. Has some good acting and a handful of really striking images in the second half, but the epilogue seems obvious and unnecessary.

If a B-horror movie wants to homage other films, it could do far worse than Last Year at Marienbad. The production's entire air of mystery really sells it, from the saturated sumptuousness of its colors to the frightening and opaque gender politics (hello, "Mother"). Practically demands analysis and repeated viewing.

The basic narrative is B-movie: Lady Dracula Vs. Lady Chatterley, but the way the story's told (in style & content) is so deliberate & well thought out, it's strangely original. Not only is the cinematography stunning, but the film pulls the material away from schlock by hinting that the "victims" may b more dangerous than the "monsters"; doubling as feminist commentary on gender roles; & never distinguishing between supernatural hunger 4 flesh & its equally taboo biologically-driven equivalent.

{Director's Cut} Lyrical, erotic vampire chiller highlighted by Seyrig's sweetly sinister interpretation of ancient but well-preserved bloodsucker Elizabeth Bathory. The violence is fairly restrained -- save for a brilliantly executed razor-induced death scene -- while the sexual messages are more explicit.

Like the other Kumel films I've seen, this is a horror/mystery, although closer to straight horror. It's less surreal than the others, and although I wouldn't say it's a "typical" sexy vampire flick, it didn't impress me with its originality either. I enjoyed the complex gender politics (and jeez, the most phallic window handle I've ever seen), Seyrig's performance and the general aesthetics. But overall it kinda lacked that eccentric Kumel charm and was a little too schlocky for my tastes.

This movie has a cult following. I don't belong to it. "Ooh, lesbian vampires!" Big fat hairy deal

An exquisite, hallucinatory film that's utterly perfect. Not a lot happens but it has such a unique beauty and atmosphere that it doesn't particularly matter. Glamorous lesbian aristocrats stomping around beautiful hotel rooms breathlessly recounting tales of blood drinking and nipple torture, what more could you want?

I'm not sure just how scary or how erotic this is supposed to be, but it's neither.
