Summary: In the year 2019, a plague has transformed most every human into vampires. Faced with a dwindling blood supply, the fractured dominant race plots their survival; meanwhile, a researcher works with a covert band of vamps on a way to save humankind.
what a waste. any director who manages to squander willem dafoe and sam neill in the same film deserves to burn in hell. though they're radically different works, just watch ferrara's THE ADDICTION to see how a director properly utilizes extreme actorly personalities within an ostensibly supernatural framework (or ferrara's NEW ROSE HOTEL to see how a director properly utilizes willem dafoe)
'Daybreakers' just solidifies something I've known for a while; I love cheesy B-Movies. From the moment you see Edward's disembodied clothing floating in a mirror, you know that the main reason this movie exists is to blow stuff up. Looking at it in that light, it fulfills that expectation. No one here is necessarily deep in character, but you get just enough to know what everyone is looking for and watching them butt heads is the reward. The ignorance of everyone involved is why it's thrilling.
There isn't a lot to dislike when it comes to a film like Daybreakers. However, I can't guarantee that everyone will enjoy it. It is, after all, a genre film, one of sci-fi and horror, and if you don't enjoy those types of films, you won't like Daybreakers either. I enjoyed it though; the plot was interesting, the depth made me think, and the film ended up being really fun. Sometimes the CGI didn't hold up, and the acting wasn't very good, but I still had a really enjoyable time with it.
Wastes a pretty good premise in a script that is too eager to unravel an interesting story world. And lots of blood... unintentionally comedic amounts?
Interesting spin on the Vampire mythos, lots of contrived pot twists, but an interesting take on what happens when anyone bitten by a vampire becomes a vampire.
