It has some great glimpses of humor, but in the end it becomes too uninteresting to follow Nietzshe (or Trier, if you wish) and the acclaimed birth of his talent. Some good characters and some truly horrid ones which, mixed with some indifferent directing from Thuesen, never really exceed any expectation.

Genius people often times have a very childish side to them, and Lars Trier's is at full display with this less than graceful look back on his film school years. After the movie has concluded, we get a glimpse at how Trier came up with the idea for 'Dogville', in a short scene that sums up the essential problem with this: It's always exactly one shot too many or too clumsy for the kind of elegance needed, if your movie is about how everyone but you suck.

Lars von Trier's delightful reminiscence of film school; he wrote the script and entrusted it to the minor director Jacob Thuesen, who, if he doesn't make it quite soar, does right by it. It's one of von Trier's funniest scripts (the accident that secures his entry into film school is priceless), with his traditionally apt sense of character. Jonatan Spang could have been a more charismatic lead (a common fault in picaresque narratives), but the supporting cast is top-notch; a must for fans.

Not "ha ha" funny, but offers a humorous take on the danish movie business in the 80s. Which makes it target audience pretty narrow, I guess...
