Summary: A genre-defying film blending horror, supernatural elements, comedy, and social realism. Set in a Midlands village, it explores the underbelly of contemporary rural Britain in communities where crime is unchecked and drugs, intimidation, and power games are blandly accepted as the fabric of daily life. (Magnolia Pictures)
Truly original, and a way better revenge movie than those silly over the top hollywood movies like 'death sentence' or 'law abiding citizen' -- if you like the 'death wish' ilk of movie, you'll love this... you can tell i like the death wish genre by my rating of this film. Hands down the best of its genre.
"Considine hawks a striking cipher, an avenging angel whose metaphysical communion with otherworldly energies is echoed in the film's unhinged, stewy surface." - Ed Gonzalez
There are a few parts that probably didn't receive the same amount of care as the rest of the film, but the rest of the film is for the most part a tonally rich, clever, and humane take on the slasher.
Sticks to the maxim, "Revenge is best served up slowly". Recommended.
Sticks to the maxim, "Revenge is best served up slowly". Wel at least fairly slowly. Recommended.
Not as good as I expected. Acting was superb, the mood and suspense great, but the story itself is just a friggin count of monte cristo. What is the moral of this film? That you should seek revenge at all costs? Plus, I managed to guess most of plot twists.. Not a bad film, but not great as well.
Dark and disturbing tale of revenge. The touches of Black comedy can't distract from the feeling that this isn't going to end well for any of the dislikeable characters.
Quite an experimental movie, it comprises of very calm and easy sound score, intense and brutal scenes, some interesting approaches to the generic drug-story scenario, and some decent acting. Does it work? Yes, as long as you're not sleepy or hater of slow films.
A great revenge thriller made fantastic by Paddy Considine, what a performance! Toby Kebbell was great too. The atmosphere set by Meadows in this is fantastic, the little sleepy midlands town is a great setting for some really disturbing scenes. It's a claustrophobic, surreal thriller but sprinklings of dark humour and amazing performances. One of the best british films I've ever seen.
Gritty, emotionally powerful, raw and what British Films should be made of. With an almost frightening reality to it, none of the cast could be faulted.
This film was the film that introduced me to the collaboration of Shane Meadows and Paddy Considine and as a result I became a big fan of their individual works..
Still very much my favourite film and proof that good film making doesn't have to have a big budget or high tech effects. Mind games, intimidation and revenge are the power beh
Typically for a Shane Meadows film it's gripping and instantly gets right down to business: character and story. Any pretentiously artful auteur shots are few and far between. Everyone's acting seems effortless in the naturalistic ad-libbed scenes which form the basis of a fast-moving, dynamic and well-structured story. Although many amateur moments give away the fact that this is one of his earlier films, they don't take away from its underlying strength. Paddy Considine is quietly impressive.
I first watched this film when I couldn't find any other in the shop, I thought it was a hack 'em slash 'em by the cover. Little did I realise that DMS is probably one of the best British films out, along with Trainspotting, The Acid House and Sexy Beast. It's raw, has an exellent story, the acting is amazing and there is some exellent black comedy in there as well. I won't say anything about the plot and hopefully you havent read any review that contains a spoiler.
