Summary: Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) is a mild-mannered executive with a perfect life, until one gruesome night he witnesses something that changes him forever. Transformed by grief, Hume eventually comes to the disturbing conclusion that no length is too great when protecting his family. (imdb)
I love the concept of a revenge movie that shows nothing but consequence, but the film doesn't delivers in setting the right tone. Beacon and Goodman are amazing here, but Wan is a very lacking director. One minute he is trying to pull a Paul T. Anderson (the parking lot scene) and then the next scene he has the sappiest song ever playing during the sappiest scene ever--it's frustratingly bad. The action and violence is great, but feels like gun porn without the right context. A miss.
Bacon is no Seagal. Its like Death Wish had sex with Renegade Justice and out popped Death Sentence 9 months later. I was hoping for more corniness when Bacon would kill someone, but alas, this is a "serious" film. Lets hope this doesnt become the trend for action films - its no Die Hard (so i cant imagine "Death Sentence on a boat" being used to describe any movies soon). Kelly Preston is still hot tho.
Guy's son is killed. He goes after the group that did it. The only thing separating this from the hundreds of flicks like it is that this one has Bacon & Goodman. No, seriously, that's the only difference
Now this was more my kind of flick, reminiscent of the Cannon Films era with Chuck Norris and Charles Bronson as the vigilantes with no remorse and a fuckload of firepower to scratch their itch. Here Kevin Bacon steps into the role of nice guy turned badass in this revenge tale that was simple and somewhat entertaining with some very cool camera shots. Don't expect top notch story or well written characters but if it's a mindless don't give a damn action film you're looking for, give this one a
Faktisk ganske ude mærket - men også ligegyldig. Har en del referencer til Taxi Driver i mange af voldsscenerne. Familieaction å afskyelig baggrund - uden helte.
There was some kind of okay action here and there, but all in all the script was trash. Story was plain dull. For effects, director has deffinately seen Taxi Driver and was trying to top it. I'm talking about only the very end of that classic... John Goodman was doing his best, but his part was badly written as well.
100% agree with Criticker user anerigo's review: (quoted:) [Sure it may seem like a rip-off of Taxi Driver at times, but it captures the essence of a dark action movie. It's great mindless fun that's never too emotionally involving nor ever so absurd that it becomes an exercise in parody. Bacon manages to express the extremes of his character adeptly, while the rest of the cast is mediocre enough to seem passably convincing. It's all about the gratuitous violence--nothing more, nothing less.]
i was hoping kevin bacon would be way more bad ass, i was sadly let down. for those people who like realism he acts exactly how you would imagine a "mild-mannered executive" would on a killing spree, but personally i wanted him to be more like the punisher.
Total piece of crap. 5 for Kevin Bacon being in it, but he's lucky he didn't lose all credability doing so. I HATED this film and can't even begin to list its flaws.
Many unintentionally hilarious scenes, mostly from lack of proper buildup and atmosphere. Bacon did a good job but without a captivating script it becomes impossible to ignore the glaring implausibilities strewn about.
