Summary: Christine Radcliffe (Bette Davis) encounters her lover from music school Karel Novak (Paul Henreid), whom she thought was killed in the war, by chance in New York. They are still passionately in love and marry almost immediately, much to the consternation of her current lover and benefactor, the world-famous conductor/composer Alexander Hollenius (Claude Rains), who does what he can to torment the young couple.
