Summary: Dwight Faraday (Brian Benben) is a burned-out police detective whom investigates a series of bizarre and gory killings of various men getting stomped to death, and from the type of murders and lack of murder weapon Faraday begins to suspect the killer may be a beautiful, but mysterious, young woman (Cinthia Moura) always seen around the crime scenes whom Faraday suspects to be a 'deer woman' from a local Native American legend of seducing and murdering men. All this buildup dedicated to the investigator finding out what on Earth could be mutilating these men...and the movie's called 'Deer Woman.' Okay. And while we're at it, let's change the title of Citizen Kane to 'A Sled Named Rosebud.'
It's funny, and it's gory. It doesn't even try to be scary, which is to its benefit. I mean, how can you make something as comical as a weredeer scary? Did you think anything starring the Dream On guy would be especially dark? Maybe not on the level of that Werewolf thing dude did, but it's an amusing hour of film.
Landis isn't a Master of Horror, either. This isn't scary. I suppose this could have been meant to be funny, but it isn't that, either. The Deer Woman isn't even that cute. The reference to _An American Werewolf in London_ seems less like a joke than a nostalgic yearning for past glory days. Boy, does it suck to get old
Yes, the acting sucks and no, it's not scary (this was made abundantly clear in the dream sequences: you know, where the woman beats the trucker with a severed deer leg). But this is made much more important by the Agent's monologue on his dead partner: Landis is exorcising his demons on the Twilight Zone movie, admitting accidental culpability, in a touching, sad way: "My place on this earth was getting another man killed." Perfect tonal shifts, from comedy to gore to sadness.
I'm a fan of the whole Masters of Horror series for the most part. This installment is easy to watch because of the good doses of humor and humorous characters interspersed with some classic mythic monster horror. Kudos to John landis for keeping them coming.
hilarious tongue-in-cheek horror, the whole concept is ridiculous, and done in a fantastic manner. this movie really doesn't take it's self seriously, and it's much more entertaining for that fact. it's got some acceptable gore, but should really only be watched for it's entertaining humor.
