Summary: Three Jewish brothers escape from Nazi-occupied Poland into the Belarussian forest, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and others in danger.
A bit of a thriller, a bit of a drama, Defiance is a movie you should watch for the story, and try to forget some of the more awkward scenes that spring up along the way.
Basically, as a true story of WWII, I expected something much more engaged and passioned. Defiance makes you feel detached and bored through its 137 minutes. Ed Zwick lost the chance to make a good film with such a powerful material.
It's all a bit childish and stereotypical. Evil german soldiers. Check. Drunken russians with silly accents. Check. Jewish people. Check. Forrest. Check. Action. It's going through the motions, from one set to another. No character development and little to none character relation development. And I don't really believe that running to an enemy soldier with your gun in your hand and shooting him from 1 metre distance is how they fought at that time.
The beautiful cinematography and good acting, with a interesting story. To bad it's to predictable. Besides the stupid accents, I really liked the performances of the 3 brothers; Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell.
The photography was amazing and some of the night scenes in the forest blew my mind trying to imagine how they got that lighting (unless they just filmed it at magic hour and got it done very quickly). The plot was not strong and much of the editing was very weak, especially the wedding/battle, but that was an singular event and most likely edited together to hide discontinuities.
Defiance does work, it just seems like it's trying to please the audience by doing more than it needs to. That's its main problem, and it's a distracting one. But the action is fine, if clichéd, and the story is one that is interesting and worth telling. It's a solid war movie that will keep you entertained for more than two hours, even if it's not as epic as it clearly wants to be.
Haven't seen in awhile, vaguely recall feeling it was pretty good, possibly above average. Playing it safe with a rating of 70 because RottenTomatoes critics didn't seem to particularly appreciate it.
A decent attempt from the starts Craig and Schreiber, combined with an interesting story makes an entertaining watch.Unortunatly very predictable ( and with Ed Zwick yet again doing the same thing he does for almost all his movies ; with the same crew, try to make an oscar winning epic and fail, epicly) i expected a bit more. But still entertaining enough. Half the movie is in russian, the other half in russian accents speaking english... when theres only russians.. why?!??!!?
