I love how the automatic advertisements show up at the top of this page expecting you to check out their awesome rafting trips. Yes, because everyone wants to go rafting after this film. "Come for the view but stay for the violence and anal rape!"

I thought more would happen in Deliverance than actually did; i.e., I thought it would this totally insane and crazy adventure but it's very grounded and realistic, which isn't a detriment. It's a damned good movie, that unfortunately drags on just a little too long at the end, otherwise my score would be higher. Still, there are a lot of memorable scenes here. And you gotta love "Dueling Banjos."

Our egos want to be Burt Reynolds. Our hopes are to be Jon Voight. In the end, we're all Ned Beatty getting our ear twisted by nasty people...politicians and bankers. BANKERS OWN EVERYTHING THE BILDERBERGS RUN THE WORLD CHEMTRAILS 9/11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB. I may be off topic at this point, but you all need to know. Thanks Alex Jones!

It's always interesting when a film takes the idea of taking a life totally seriously. As grim as this film is, it never quite takes Lewis' side that killing is something you have to do. Also, to parrot everyone who's ever seen this film, the Dueling Banjos scene is just amazing. One has to wonder if Boorman was thinking of Straw Dogs when he'd made this, or if he'd seen Wake In Fright.

I guess I expected more Evil Hillbilly Nastyness, but the slower pace and realistic approach worked rather nicely. Definitely gets under the skin on a few occasions, but it might help that I'm a wussy when it comes to canoeing and rock climbing ...and Evil Hillbillies.

Splendid and suspenseful film that teaches us that all people not living in the city are inbread freaks, all city folk are essentially wankers and that if you want to do a night scene, you have to put a bit of effort into it in order for it to not look completely ridiculous.

At well under two hours this stills seems drawn out. The buildup is painfully long, the middle section (or the "movie" as its often known) is only about twenty minutes, followed by another long series of sequences for the epilogue. Never really boring but still not all the engrossing either.

Quite an unpleasant boat trip, much in the same vein as 'Mean Creek'. The film kinda loses steam near the end but it does have many memorable moments nonetheless (like the 'Dueling banjos' scene)

Very clever survival adventure with inconsistently brilliant scenes, engaging & gritty hands-on approach, fantastic use of score & all kinds of variably interesting subtext. Really what ties it all together is the vastly cinematic & subversive exploitation-plotting. I get how the hillbilly depictions could be seen as offensive but managed not to care since despite all the fuss, it's really not about hillbillies. It's more about the dark elemental side of civilized man & all that crap.

Re-watching half a century later (2021), one thing that strikes the viewer is how many times filmmakers have copied scenes from this movie. Mostly well made, although some parts are a bit clunky, in particular Voight's cliff-climbing sequence. The performances are variable, and the significance debatable, but it seems undeniable that it broke new ground in building suspense, filming action and conjuring fear about the consequences of attempts to re-encounter a "nature" seemingly left behind.

In veins with such 'It's grim out in the country side' nasties as 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. There are enough memorable scenes to warrant the tag of 'a true classic', and can I just quickly state how amazed I am at the fact, that the banjo is still an instrument that is actually sold in stores? I thought a movie like this would be the 'Matt Damon' of it.

Famous for two scenes, the dueling "banjos" and the squeal like a pig scene, there is actually a pretty good movie around those two scenes as well. A really good cast that had really showed their talents and intensity in this movie, it was something I could not turn away from. The scenery was actually quite nice to look at as well. I like how the movie became dramatic after the action sequences showing the after effect of what happened, unlike most movies that contain action scenes. Classic.

Scarier than any horror movie. The film's increasing sense of isolation and despair is extremely powerful. None of the actors particularly stand out, but they work very well as an ensemble. And of course... Duelling Banjos. One complaint: the ending was too long and seemed too tangential. Otherwise a great, great film.

The backwoods of the south never seemed as sinister. The "squeal like a pig" scene has become one of the most famous scenes in movies, and it's for good reason. There is a heartbreaking rawness to that scene as well as many scenes that follow. When the credits roll and all is said and done, you feel like you just witnessed a sad, tragic real life nightmare. Such a gut wrenching movie.

The basic concept of the movie is promising, it starts with two classic oppositions - man versus nature and city versus countryside - then adds unstable friendship relations to the mix. Predictably this bond is put under duress and gradually everything starts to unravel. The execution of this idea is not perfect; there are, for example, some problems with the narrative arc. This problem, however, is made up for with some classic scenes, great nature shots and decent performances.

Starts off strong and gains a bunch of (highly unethical) entertainment points on account of its ill-advised action scenes, showing its main actors in daring, high-risk situations that people in that position should have half a mind to never find themselves in on set. The "are we the bad guys, too, in a way?" subplot doesn't hit home, and so the final act serves more as a prolonged countdown to the credits than as additional suspense. Can't go wrong with dueling string instruments, though.

Not particularly illuminating -- has the standard horror movie trope of "outback hicks are out to murder you" and uses it to push this story of a group of city-slicking men burying a body that is neither interesting nor entertaining as a horror film or a morality tale. I also have a problem with one of the main characters being raped, but not seeming very bothered by it at all.

I've never really cared for wilderness survival narratives. And although this film is definitely one of the better survival films that I've seen, I still feel as if it's limited by the genre. Still, it is an interesting and tense film that asks some interesting questions about man's relationship to nature. Unfortunately, I think the narrative suffers from leaving a few too many of these questions unanswered.

Deliverance is a film with some incredibly well executed themes and performances overwrought by length. It's a film about man and nature, man vs nature and man AS nature. The greatest issue it faces is its bloated length -- even at only 110 minutes. The narrative is spread far too thin, which is a shame, as the little it has is quite strong.

It's no wonder denizens of the boonies feel hard done by at such times. Well done movie, but still cuturally alienating/polarizing & probably one of the dominos in the lineup to DT's election.
