I've always liked Lorre but this performance is on a level all its own. He plays it more down to earth than usual and by the end his character is incredibly heartbreaking. It's a shame this is his only directorial effort because he does a great job with the pacing, the use of flashbacks and the exquisite noir visuals. It's also a genuinely fascinating character study examining the murky moral ground left in the wake of WWII in Germany and the struggles that brings to live with oneself.

A beautiful but slightly messy film noir from Peter Lorre touching on themes of betrayal, misogyny and loneliness. The murky shots of bombed-out Hamburg with all it's dark nooks and alleys push the mood of this film to their limits. All in all it's a great film.
