Dersu Uzala has an epic feel for landscape, but it tells a simple tale of friendship that transcends culture, class, and language. How is deep, long-lasting friendship between the Siberian trapper and the Russian surveyor even possible? It emerges from shared experience (each saves the other's life), mutual respect, and a sense of common humanity. Kurosawa shows that in cross-cultural human relations, what we share in common is far more important than the ways in which we are different.

Outstanding effort from Kurosawa that reminded me a lot of Herzog's "Stroszek".

Kurosawa's only Russian movie I believe. Very touching story. Check out the scene with the snow storm!

John Boorman more masterfully portrayed cultural cooperation a decade later in The Emerald Forest, but Dersu Uzala -- still an exceptional film -- cannot be denied its unprecedented standing as a marvel of sumptuous Siberian cinema. Kurosawa knows exactly how to capture his striking surroundings and utilise those rich landscapes to passionately accentuate his story, which is one of film's great friendships, distinguished furthermore by Maksim Munzuk's iconic acting performance. It's a triumph.

I don't disagree that earlier Kurosawa is great, but I find my self most enthralled by his work in color. Dersu Uzala is at once a beautiful meditation on friendship as well as a tragic reminder of the antagonistic nature of contrasting environments.
