"The film's unabashed willingness to go from bleak topical piece on genital mutilation to guilty-pleasure glamour can be disconcerting." - Diego Costa

Good photography, too depressive music. A choking and provoking film by it's reality, but superficial for it's script.

The story of a poor somali who turns into a supermodel sensation looks great, and the lead actress is quite good, but loses it's focus and ends up as a moral lesson and a political speech.

By-the-numbers and rather dull, Desert Flower doesn't quite know whether it wants to be a plain biopic or a political movie against barbaric religious practises in Africa. A few unremarkable performaces from some Brit regulars, while in the lead the worryingly skinny Kebede doesn't have to do much besides standing around looking pretty. If the circumcision scene was played at the beginning rather than the end it might have aided our sympathy towards Waris and what she managed to achieve.
