Probably Waters's most outrageous movie; and for him, that's saying a lot. Viewers of any gentility will be mortified by all sorts of tasteless goings-on

Am I the only one who wanted Mink Stole to earn her rightful place as fascist ruler? All those communist sodomites deserved to be ruled by her iron fist.

"Trash 'fantasy' where two murderous women seek sanctuary in Mortville, a town built from garbage for trashy misfits and ruled by a fascist Queen. This is a typical, somewhat imaginative Waters trash-fest with plenty of shocks including lesbian sex with a 500 pound woman, eye-gouging, sex-change and castration with scissors, cannibalism, and the usual nudism, vomit, repulsiveness, and bad acting."

Certainly one of Waters' nastiest and most grotesque, and probably his best along with Female Trouble. There's a striking contrast between the ostensible tastelessness, sillyness and vulgarity that Desperate Living achieves, and an underlying tastefulness governing the structure of the drama, the visual compositions, the measured pace. It realizes extreme cinema's twisted potential to the fullest, a true gem of trash.

A John Waters fairytale.

Although Pink Flamingos is still my favorite from Waters, this is almost just as good and for all the same reasons.

I usually like John Waters's disgusto fillms, but this one just totally misses the boat

"Desperate Living" delights in its own moral bankruptcy. It revels in its own squalor. This movie gleefully smears poop all over its face and runs nextdoor smiling, ringing its neighbor's doorbell, and trying to kiss whomever answers. This movie is deliriously disgusting and it made me feel filthy after the first, second, and tenth time I watched it. I'm so glad John Waters was born.

Ugh! One of the most aesthetically disgusting films I've ever seen. The mise-en-scene made me sick to my stomach with all of those dingy, ugly sets. Great stuff from Waters.

I love John Waters films. He knows what he is setting out to do and doesn't care about the rest of it. Hence why we have such films as Pink Flamingos and Desperate Living. I would rate this higher, but it would merely be my straight opinion and not an honest opinion. Over time it may change, but anyway, this is the lesbian romp, and I do mean ROMP. Who ever thought perversion could be like this? Backwards Day or no, this film took minutes of my life and I am glad I can't get them back.
