Summary: Villainous Gru (Steve Carell) lives up to his reputation as a despicable, deplorable and downright unlikable guy when he hatches a plan to steal the moon from the sky. But he has a tough time staying on task after three orphans land in his care. Julie Andrews voices the role of Groo's malevolent mother in this comical animated tale.
At first appearing fresh and interesting, it quickly becomes apparent there's not much of a coherent storyline here, rather a loose plot to fuse together a collection of disjointed scenes involving cheap 3D effects or weak, childish gags. The soundtrack is incredibly bland too, and once again money has been thrown at needless celebrity voice talent. Might be okay if you're a (young) child or sat in a cinema screen, but if you're an adult watching in 2D there really is nothing of interest here.
Predictable? sure. But it's adorable and great for its target audience, which is likely people who are younger than those who gave this movie a bad review.
Very sweet and quite funny. It's no Pixar production that's for sure, and overextends itself occasionally in its attempts at having an emotive core. But despite the heavy handed melodrama you'd have to have a heart of stone not to enjoy "Despicable Me" on some level. It is helped by some nice animation and good voice acting. Purely as a kids movie it's undoubtedly very good indeed.
