A good early work from Lang. Bernhard Goetzke has a great face for the part as Death, and the film has neat visuals and some really strong ideas (e.g., in Death's world the lifespan of the living are represented by candle lights). I watched it with live piano accompaniment by Fuzzy which was very cool and definitely added to the experience.

Up there with Lang's best. It's a beautiful and haunting story of love and death, told in a very interesting and creative way that always keeps the story moving and the viewer interested. The images and camera tricks are amazing and the score is very appropriate, contributing to a very surreal atmosphere.

Technically impressive, but thematically and narratively a bit too predictable, too flat. Still really good, albeit some way from the higher highs and consistent high level of Metropolis, M and the Mabuse movies.

Though Destiny's plot is somewhat mawkish and broad, cobbling together mostly unrelated fables, even this early in his career, Lang was wrenching incredible pathos from his images.

The plot is pretty simple and the message blunt, but what it lacks in substance it more than makes up for in style and imagination.

Imaginative and tragic. The leads convincingly play the "everyman/everywoman" roles across a landscape of eras and settings, but Death's calm and unrelenting gaze steals the show.

A bit inconsistent in tone, but interesting, and a good watch, nonetheless, and the effects still impress after all this time.

A really interesting premise with some odd but fascinating sets. This is cleary a really ambitious movie and it usually works. Probably my favourite Lang movie because when it works, it really really works, and that allows me to overlook the very slight failures. Plus, it entertained me more than his other movies I've seen.

An interesting and well told story. While its not as visually stunning as some of Fritz Lang's other works it is well paced, directed, and uses some really fun inter-tiles.

Expressionism or romanticism? Murnau often achieved a synthesis, but Destiny plays more like a fairy tale. Goetzke is wonderful as death and possibly inspired Bergman. However, the intermittently engaging narrative makes this a less essential entry in early feature length cinema, and it is not a patch on Lang's later more acclaimed efforts.

Some nice set pieces and an original storyline (for its time) make Lang's silent film decent. The stories are kind of stereotypical.

Consistently stylish and entertaining spectacle in a smoothly presented fairytale manner. Bernhard Goetzke stands out as a stern but sympathetic Death. Features some great sets from some of the same designers responsible for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari from the year before. The settings are just as striking and fantastic in their way, but more solid and detailed, and a lot less gimmicky.

Fascinating, as most of the works of the 1920-30's German cinema.

A well told story with great effects, especially for that time. I'm a big fan of Fritz Lang and have enjoyed M and Metropolis and I thoroughly enjoyes this well crafter story as well. This is a movie I wouldn't mind watching again.

Enjoyable despite its flaws. Ambitious in scope and full of magical visuals, the period decor is wonderful. But in each story the film relies on caricaturization; the Arabs are religious fanatics, the Venetians tragically romantic, and the Chinese practitioners of Oriental voodoo. It may be too thematically simple to justify such brazen spectacle, but at least it's interesting.

Strong early film that resembles older fairy tales. Death takes away one half of a young couple, and the other tries to get him back. The three tries she gets make interesting (if somewhat exaggerated) stories.

Full of magic, spectacle and atmosphere. Some marvelous camera tricks and memorable imagery, with a very unusual and intriguing narrative structure. And yet, the movie wasn't that engaging, but maybe that's just because I was feeling sleepy.

this fairy tale, while naturally simple and stereotypical, has moments of sullen beauty. a very sleepy film as well, i'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

Some brilliant long shots of minimalist landscapes highlight an otherwise unremarkable tragi-saccharine yarn. It's also marred by some pretty uncomfortable racist vignettes that are neither that visually impressive nor all that necessary for the overarching story.

I enjoyed it more as a museum piece of silent film than on a purely entertainment level. The 3 vignettes making up the film show off different styles, effects and even moods. Lots to see, has a sense of adventure, and of course an overall moral! Its like a less oppressive Intolerance.

Damn, Fritz Lang could tell a story. This is a relatively simple fantasy tale, but it's a beautiful and efficiently told story with great imagination. There is some troubling Orientalism in the third story, but aside from that this is just a really good silent film that doesn't quite match Lang's best silent or overall work but is another credit to his filmography.

Masterpiece. I expected that the girl involve into the stories. If stories were strong as the main story, i gave 100/100 to the movie. Candle metaphor then used in Macario. Emperor's and magician's fingernails might be inspired to create Freddy Krueger and Wolverine! 5/5 or 93/100.
