Entertaining mix of genres, funny and tense when it has to be. It falters somewhat at the end when it jams a ton of cliches together rather clumsily, but what precedes it makes up for a lot.

Not a lot to say here. A great Western that's consistently hilarious, entertaining, and well-paced. Score is not a grade.

A truly overlooked gem. A film that didn't take itself too seriously but managed to run through humour, suspense, drama, muscic, dance and some believable characterisation. Clearly a strong influence on Blazing Saddles (as far as Dietrich's numbers go) this manages to keep the lighter side of life at the fore without becoming too frothy. Solid as a western or a light comedy this is worthy of inclusion in any western collection.

If only because of the always awesome Jimmy Stewart, this movie is worth watching. The racial stereotypes and song and dance numbers were pretty grating, though.

A hidden Western gem. It's funny, clever and well, it's one of the true Westerns out there and I believe Jimmy and Marlene were rising stars at the time or already were.

"Cowboy without a gun" is a great idea, so much so that it's a tremendous disappointment when it's abandoned almost immediately.

Jimmy Stewart is of course as charming as all heck and Dietrich, though a bit cheesy and overdone at times, is also good fun to watch (apart from a couple bad song and dance numbers which were rightly, and poorly, parodied in Blazing Saddles). Certainly there were a few annoying jokes and the racial stereotyping made for some uncomfortable watching (though luckily only had about a minute of screentime), but overall it is, if not desperately funny, certainly extremely charming and good fun.

Now this is a fine Western comedy. It's got the same leisurely attitude of Rio Bravo but with more laughs and better drama (though the songs might be superior in the Hawks film). It works because it manages to blend its unbridled fun with touching characterization. The progression of Marlene Dietrich's character is unexpected amongst the lighthearted tone of most of the movie but is ultimately the crux of the film's success.

Western comedy with mostly grating humour, including some tiresome racial stereotypes, but the charm of Stewart and his clever strategising raises it above banality. Deitrich was good besides her unintentionally hilarious musical numbers (deservedly spoofed in Blazing Saddles) and there is also a rather novel way to end a mass shootout. Occasional switches to a more serious tone just don't fit. You'd be better off watching Garner in 'Support Your Local Sheriff'.

Classic Western which manages to encompass suspense, comedy, romance, tenderness, vivid characterization, horseplay, songs and standard Western excitements, without moving for more than a moment from a studio main street set. It starts with a sign reading 'Welcome to Bottleneck' and an outburst of gunfire; it ends with tragedy followed by a running joke. Hollywood expertise at its very best.
