Summary: Based on a story by M. Night Shyamalan and directed by the brothers Dowdle (Quarantine helmers Drew and John Eric), this edgy thriller is set in an elevator, where a group of passengers are trapped with none other than the king of the underworld. Luckily for them, a homicide detective (Chris Messina) is on board. Not so luckily: the cop has issues of his own, including a not-so-long-ago-kicked addiction to alcohol.
While the first half is actually good, with some good tricks and twists, the second, well, I guess Shyamalan took control of it and started calling the shots. I'm sure he did.
Devil isn't a film that is all that great, but you can have a decent enough time while watching it. The actors were actually the best part, and because of their good performances, there are some thrilling scenes. I'll maintain that the premise is silly, and there are a large number of plot points that don't add up to anything, but it's a movie that can be enjoyable. But don't think too hard, because you'll end up with a negative lasting impression.
Thoroughly entertaining in all the wrong ways, Devil's main problem, or perhaps its saving grace, is that it perfectly resembles a big-budget Asylum film. Shyamalan was clearly more involved in the writing process than we were led to believe.
Important for the facts that it teaches us about the devil. For instance, if you drop your toast and it lands jelly side down, yep the devil caused that.
It has a nice opening sequence, but that's about all I can say is good about this movie. The writer (Mr. Shyamalan, somewhere along the road you really lost it) has shot himself on the foot by putting the story in an irredeemable corner. It had nowhere to go honestly. Also its soundtrack sounded like "The worst horror movie cliches of all-time" album; then they tried to go all "Saw" on us....If you really need to see an elevator movie, see Natali's "Elevated" and see that it can actually be done.
This is a thoroughly entertaining thriller. Fun from beginning to end. There's some cheesy religious undertones to it all, but it doesn't distract much. Great rental.
A series of tiresome revelations from personality voids of characters. For a film so small in scope it's still handled amazingly poorly with such hilarious leaps in logic as toast falling jam side down meaning the devil is nearby.
I had high expectations for this film and thankfully it lived up to them because it was great! Everything worked perfectly and creating that claustrophobic mood with five people trapped in an elevator. It takes a while to really kick into gear but once it does the action and twists never stop. Its also a great film to watch with a group of people because you get to play 'whodunnit' the whole time. Overall well worth the watch and Horror/Thriller fans will certainly get their kicks out of it!
Pensei que fosse melhor, apesar de se notar que tem tem a mao do M. Night Shyamaian. E' pena, porque a historia tinha potencial para fazer algo muito melhor.
Dumb and campy, but man, does it take itself seriously. The whole "devil in an elevator" conceit would probably have worked like gangbusters in an eighth grade creative writing class, but as a movie, how about not. Earns a few brownie points, however, for its climax, which at least wasn't the cheap cop-out I was expecting.
A pretty uninspired and obvious whodunnit setup, that does manage to build a few tense moments, and if it hadn't been for the insanely annoying narrator and other idiocies, it could have been an almost enjoyable ride.
Better than I expected and worse than I had hoped. This movie had some genuine tension throughout. The supernatural element showing up in the end rather than rolling through almost immediately after the opening credits could have added to that, but I won't complain too much. An enjoyable enough thriller.
