One of the most surreal movies I've ever seen. I don't really have a lot to say except that I like it, and the photography is outstanding.

A beautifully shot homage to classic noir. It's a compelling, swiftly-moving story of a sports journalist who gets involved with a washed-up actress. The high contrast black & white photography, liberal use of unusual wipes and striking musical choices are the highlights. I enjoyed watching it, but like a lot of Fassbinder, by the end I felt like "well, that's that". I think he manages to make his films very distinctive, but they rarely catch hold of me.

The creativity in the lighting/editing/photography/musical choices/impeccable performances warrants your undivided attention. There's a minor problem with the reporter's gf part due to Fassbinder's theatrical nature, she shows up later almost out of nowhere, but it's restrained. This is what Fassbinder does best - taking a story we know (the Sunset Blvd. references are high [though this is still largely based on a German incident]) and translating it into his own cinematic language. Irresistible

Fassbinder did a great job reproducing the feel of an old noir-ish film. I was surprised to see this was made in the 80s.

What a strange movie. So far my favorite Fassbinder movie.

each actor in this movie seemed to be on a rollercoaster of good/bad acting, and fassbinder himself even followed suit. fassbidner also did nothing to make me relate to the characters. the last half hour was pretty decent, except it kept going for a couple minutes when it should have ended, ruining a good ending.
