Summary: 10-year-old Harriet dreams of leaving her home, where she doesn't feel she's needed by her mother and sister Gwen. When her mother dies in a car accident, she really starts to make plans for leaving and she finally does so together with her childlike (mentally ill) friend Ricky. (imdb)

"Digging to China" is a deeply moving story that is wholly original and heartfelt. The cast, especially the two leads, give wonderful and realistic performances that succeed in bringing you into the story with them. The characters all make sense, and together their conflicting views and experiences bring this film to a crushing climax of misunderstandings that is so honest and awesome to behold. I hope Timothy Hutton gives directing another try, because he shows some real potential here.
