Summary: Set in 1959 Baltimore, writer-director Barry Levinson's debut film focuses on a group of pals on the brink of adulthood who find solace at the local diner. The late-night banter between groom-to-be Eddie (Steve Guttenberg), best man Billy (Tim Daly), womanizer Boogie (Mickey Rourke), music addict Shrevie (Daniel Stern) and quirky Modell (Paul Reiser) ranges from girls to growing up and getting old. Ellen Barkin and Kevin Bacon also appear.
Nearly every scene is an example of how guys are jerks, and yet the film somehow balances that well with a dose of light comedy and some reasonable dramatic arcs. It's enjoyable to watch and has a lot of great pieces, though the whole doesn't entirely come together.
a charming low key drama, never really trying to be a blockbuster, but a simple down to earth coming of age tale. it features a host of young faces of people early in their careers, and i really appreciated the sentimental story here.
Takes way too long to tie up every single loose end in the final act (including two music-centric scenes, back to back). Cute movie, but given that it's a movie from 30 years ago about young adults from 50 years ago, time hasn't been too kind on it. Judd Apatow's comedies basically are a rehash of this.
There are plenty of charming, great moments and scenes in this, but otherwise the whole film is middling, feeling far too long and yet not deep enough either. Neither does it help that, by the end, nothing truly significant happens to the male characters and that a couple of them are unsympathetic and one dimensional.
I really like these slice-of-life movies set in the past, usually about the director's life. Except when nothing really happens and none of the characters are likeable besides Guttenberg, which is baffling.
Pretty decent but not as amazing as some people claim it to be. Loved all the scenes with Mickey Rourke, pretty easy to see why he became so huge after this, just a natural born movie star. Great portrayal of this period of a man's life, could relate. Wouldn't have minded to see more Bacon in here, but I feel that way about many things in my life.
Mickey Rourke is so magnetic in this movie, it's easy to see how he became a star after this. Unfortunately he's the only watchable part of this movie.
