Summary: A San Francisco cop with little regard for rules (but who always gets results) tries to track down a serial killer who snipes at random victims. (imdb)
WAY too overly dramatic, i mean seriously. some poor acting on the part of the antaginist. this movie is a little too slow at times, and dirty harry is NOT tough as nails, i mean he got punched twice and layed down on the ground for about five minutes, thats just sad. i'll have to give this super high marks on the idea and writing, of couse i have to mention the famous catch phrase too, everyone loves that.
I prefer Eastwood in westerns but this is still pretty good. A sort of sadistic maniac cop runs around breaking the law and being very entertaining while doing it.
Grimy and tense, Eastwood's character is definitely the heart of this film. The plot is full of clichés and the film's authoritarian, just let the cops be cops, attitude is disturbing but there's no denying the film is still an effective crime thriller.
Dirty Harry is a classic film for the crime genre. And the detective Harry Badass Callahan is an icon of the American cinema police. Innovative, a great success in the 70s, should be seen because it is one of the best stages of Clint Eastwood as an actor.
Clint Eastwood creates very likable character, despite the fact that Harry is racist, who lives and kills by his own laws. Important film, because it's probably the first one that creates such strong right-wing character. Problem is, that the film lacks any moral ambivalence. It justifies and glorifies violence, and opposes any civil rights movements. Entertaining story and interesting character.
The shot of Eastwood on the bridge alone is enough justify Callahan's status as one of the greatest movie badasses, it's just a shame that the rest of the film is so ridiculous. Every other character comes off as either incompetent or dull - except, of course, for Scorpio, who is one of the whiniest, least menacing antagonists I've ever seen (his appearance on the field was just embarrassing). The fact that the film's message is about as subtle as Harry's .44 Magnum doesn't help.
