That's it! I have finally given up on teenagers. The book the movie is based on is apparently a huge hit in US. It feels like the book was written by marketing analysts. Let's take the houses from Harry Potter, combine them with Katniss from Hunger Games and throw a little 1984 on top of it. That will sell. LAZY FUCKING WRITING. FUCK IT, I'm writing a dystopian teen novel tomorrow. That having been said the movie actually does an admirable job with a very weak story. Not bad. Just meh...

Take one part 'Brave New World' and muddle it with 4 parts 'Hunger Games'. Shake hard and strain over ice. Garnish with two and a half hours of my life that I'll never get back and there you have it: The Borehattan.

As a Dystopian YA film it amplifies teenage angst by putting it in a sci-fi world. But unlike The Hunger Games (and the theme of how the government/media targets children) this one argues that...choosing your college major is hard. It has some cool things going for it: a post-apocalyptic Chicago, M83's Tangerine Dream-inspired music, and Shailene Woodley. But other parts are silly, including the Starship Troopers casting, simplistic philosophy, and soap opera romance. Enter with caution.

While I knew virtually nothing going in aside from what the trailer showed me (haven't read the books), my general idea of the world was mostly met. But I couldn't get past what I felt were overtly-melodramatic performances, the most egregious of which was Woodley's (though she wasn't the worst). I was never destined to love this, but unfortunately it didn't ever push past a level of general malaise from me; I didn't really end up caring about anybody or anything I saw. Winslet was good, though.

Seemingly an anti-Cleisthenes remake of FULL METAL JACKET, but after basic training Joker becomes the female sniper. If this sounds rebellious, it nevertheless does evince a rather militaristic yet at least residually moralistic view of the transition to adulthood that seems peculiar to contemporary American ideology. Unexcitingly filmed no doubt, but the way this was disliked by audiences and critics seems suspiciously like they have trouble accepting movies targeted at a youthful female crowd.

There's been some movies lately that I've said had some good base ideas but I didn't care for the filmic storytelling (Transcendence is probably the best example). This is more the opposite: I have no major problem with the directing or acting or anything, but man alive, this world and this concept are STUPID. Really. In terms of approximation of any kind of political or sociological reality, this universe makes Harry Potter and Hunger Games look like The Wire. It makes no fucking sense!

Yeah yeah, I get it.. so this dystopia is supposed to be a "clever" metaphor for high school cliques. You have jocks, nerds, nice kids, the poors, rebel cool kids, etc.. No wonder this was so appealing to teenie girls. The main character is a cool kid "rebel" or divergent if you will and she hooks up with another rebel in disguise who happens to be the alpha male jock panty wetter. Go figure. They ride off into the sunset after defeating nerd queen Winslet who looks a lot like Gillian Anderson.

When she said "I want to take it slow", I swear I could hear all the old, white republicans in the bible belt clap their hypocrite little hands together. I can see why this would be the shit for an average american teenage girl. But I'm not an average american teenage girl, and in my world this story is a divergent, and it needs to be terminated!

Dystopias r often improbable but the society here seems particularly implausible within its own context. A truth-telling caste? There'd probably be less time spent head-scratching if everything didn't feel like a checklist for Build-Ur-Own-Hunger Games, but as a franchise starter it could be worse. By the end, the writer's given our heroine some clever solutions 2 problems that smoothly call back events from the first half & it's hard 2 find an actress as skilled & compelling as Woodley

The well-built universe and the exciting, powerful "fear drug" sequences make up for some of this film's other flaws and push it into the original Hunger Games movie quality. I tend to accept dystopian societies at face value, though, so that may have improved this score.

YA fiction adaptations always have a soft sci-fi edge that, for some reason, seems like it was developed with very little care, effort, or depth. "Divergent" is a half-baked movie catering to a teenage girl target audience who can only read books with small words and long for the message to tell them that they can save the world. No, not with a sixth grade reading level you can't.

An okay science fiction adaptation that suffers from a muddled plot that is heavy on anti-fascist politics. Yet Shailene Woodley is so good in the lead role that she is able to make the film watchable despite its middling plot. The film rests entirely on her shoulders. Decent production values and world building.

"Mean Girls" in uniform, except without the clever dialogue and depth of character. Our heroine is "divergent", which means she can keep more than one single thought in her head, since the target audience is at that age where you're supposed to go "I'm a complex person with deep thoughts, everyone else is shallow!" Having established that, "Divergent" spends 2 1/2 very dull hours single-mindedly checking off scenes from the book without ever engaging in any way.

I like Woodley a lot even though I felt she was a little misplaced in this role. Maybe I just have a hard time separating her from her EXCELLENT performance in Spectacular Now. She's talented and makes it more watchable than it should be. Aside from that, it's a pretty generic dystopian YA movie. Decent idea, decent talking point, but nothing really sticks out and the end was a little anti-climatic (JUMPING ON A TRAIN). Actions scenes were uninspired. Fear drug scenes were okay. Average flick.

See one dystopian future filled with sexually frustrated teenagers, and you've seen them all. The basic premise reminds me a lot of The Giver. You would get more bang for your buck if you skipped the film entirely and paid someone $5 to vaguely describe the setting of the world. They threw some money at it, though, so it can be quite visually pleasing, and though I'm not a fan of the leads, I did rather like many of the young supporting cast members.

This seemingly hunger games rip-off has a much deeper message and story behind it. An interesting world gets built up with well acted and some well rounded characters. Quality direction one of the best soundtracks I've heard for a big budget movie in a while push this film to the same quality as the Hunger Games series (well the good sequel, not the shitty first one)

Held my interest throughout, despite it being a mish-mash of ideas stolen from other young adult (hate that term) sources. Like another reviewer said, it feels like it was written by marketing execs. It's a well-made film with Hunger Games aspirations but I'm guessing the source material of the books is pretty terrible. It seems like the reverse of The Golden Compass (a poor young adult movie made from superb source material).

Not without its flaws, but Divergent is among the better in this wave of dystopian (yay!) scifi fantasy teen romance films. Certainly better than Hunger Games, thanks to an actually engaging (if nonsensically organized) universe, a good cast and two central characters with distinct and nuanced personalities. There's an attention to detail put into certain parts of this that make up for the flaws in its narrative construction. I enjoyed it and I am glad to be aboard the Divergent franchise train.

Having read the source material, I knew this was never going to be a great film, but it definitely is a fun film. Shailene Woodley gave a really good performance here. She's gonna go places. I also have to comment on how faithful the script was to the original novel. I can't think of a single place it deviated (which is ironic when you think about it).

A riveting story that is ridiculous, full of potholes and implausible. However, performances were excellent and engaging. Shailene Woodley was absolutely marvelous as the lead. Ashley Judd and Kate Winslet didn't get nearly enough screen time. The story is a real stretch, but the action is nonstop from start to finish. Many parallels with Hunger Games. Great music and sound. Overall it was exciting, tense and fun to watch, but you have to be willing to overlook the story nonsense to enjoy it.

I like how all 5 factions in Divergent are named after words you learn in those Sadlier-Oxford vocab workshop books that were typically used to fluff up your grades in English class. At points, I would make a tsking noise with my tongue and audibly groan because the concepts in this movie were so rudimentary and trite that I couldn't even bring myself to be entertained, it was just that boring. In truth, I spent an hour of this wondering how much Kate Winslet was paid to blemish her career.

Pretty much a action chick-flick with Shailene Woodley as the hero and Theo James as the quiet male eye-candy mostly just looking tall, dark and handsome without going any deeper then that. There is no real weakness. At the same time there are very few magical moments to really lift the experience and make a lasting impression. The story is a bit vague and stripped of most of it's humanity to deliver it's suspense in this trapped world of groups divided. But it captures a mood quite well.

Dear god, this was dull. Incredibly derivative, too. Absolutely nothing original about it. It's basically just a mash-up of various dystopian stories, with Harry Potter & The Hunger Games thrown in. The lead character is nothing special, despite us being told that she is. And the supporting characters are all so similar that I became confused about who they were at all. I could forgive all the unoriginality if it was actually entertaining, but it was very slow, way too long, and insanely boring.

Divergent isn't awful, but in terms of young adult movie adaptations, it's not on the level of a Harry Potter or The Hunger Games. It's on the other end of the scale -- the one we don't talk about and forget even exists, even though a sequel was confirmed before it was even released. It'd be better without its lengthy and uninteresting second act, and perhaps if it didn't reiterate themes that recent young adult movies are all echoing.

I spent an hour after this was over arguing with my wife (who loved it) about its plot holes, narrative inconsistencies, and whether it means to be a paean to anti-intellectualism. What IS inarguable--to me, anyway--is that this takes TWO FULL HOURS to get going, and by that time holy shit was I ready for it to leave me be. It's, however, a kind of teeny, corny, romance story set in a futuristic world even less believable than the one in Hunger Games (not sure why they're comparing those 2 so much). Pros: good performance from leads, camerawork & sound score; cons: weak plot, weak background story, and too happy-ended to leave an impact. I loved the story (but the reason why I don't rank it any higher is because the last scene of the movie is disappointing), and the acting is amazing as well!!! I loved it that for the duration of the movie, I felt like I was in a different world and I was living this story. Woodley surprised me the most. Her character stays on the surface, or so it seems, but she draws you completely in. Best movie I have seen in a while! 84/100.

While this was a better story than the similar female young adult series Hunger Games, it was unfortunately not as well acted the main lead was groan inducingly bad and then rest of the cast wasn't much better. But my main gripe is that it never transcends its teen girl novel origin nor does it really try.

I got surprisngly swept away in this story. There are tense moments, good action scenes and a decent storyline. There are massive gaps in the back story but I have a feeling this will be covered in the 3 sequels planned. Like most films this years this is far to long but on first watch you dont really notice it. Im sure people who have read the books wont be happy with this adaptation but as a movie watcher this was pretty good. Looking forward to the next part of the story!
