It's occasionally very good at displaying the horrors of war, but the casting is a little off -- Knightley and Marshall especially -- and at the end of it all there's just so much plodding that the passion is completely lost. The result is, unfortunately, little more than a dull staging of a romance, with not much to show for its efforts.
