Emotionally overwrought melodrama with touches of unintentionally humorous Freudianism.

My favorite version of the oft-told tale, this highlights psycho chills over more overt monster thrills and is all the better for it. Spence hated doing this but he's really good, especially as the leering, husky-voiced Hyde, but this is really Ingrid's film all the way, as she turns what could have been just another pathetic victim role into a genuinely sad, tragic figure. Joseph Ruttenberg's luminous B&W photography is breathtaking.

Good looking but horribly labored remake of the vastly superior Rouban Mammoulian film, which the studio suppressed in order to promote this one.

More psychological than horrifying.

Classy production with Tracy solid as always; he appears awkward as Hyde at first, but gets better as he goes along. Turner is too simpering in the 'good girl' role; the film belongs to bad girl Bergman, whose impish playful performance in the opening scenes gives way to convincing wrenching despair as the film continues. Crisp is also excellent as Jekyll's prospective father-in-law. Fleming's direction is crisp and efficient; love some of the double entendres in the screenplay.

Seriously terrible. It's not even a new variation, really, on the classic tale -- it's practically a shot-for-shot remake of the 1932 version only done boring (perhaps the Hays Code is partly to blame)

Fleming's lavish "classics" treatment of the story is a solid show, but the accent is on Dr. J's emotional turmoil rather than on the horror aspects and the production pales a bit beside Mamoulian's more urgent approach.

spencer tracy is pretty damned good, but ingrid bergmen is overly dramatic and unbelievable. hyde is hardly that evil, his manners include tripping someone and making someone cry....ooooh sooooo evil.
