A great lead performance undermined by an inconsistent tone and a spectacularly poorly executed romance between the two non-vampire leads.

This vampire yarn benefits from a logical script and good acting by Holden in the title role.

This brooding film is stylish and creates its own strange mood through imaginative sets, art design, music, and compelling performances by Holden as the unhappy undead and Pichel as her dour but dedicated servant.

Next in line after Bela Lugosi's 1931 Dracula in Universal's 'Classic' vampire movies this is quite atmospheric but 'tame' even, in my opinion, by the standards of the day (1936). It's like they wanted to make a sexy female vampire film but wouldn't even show any biting scenes which just takes off too much of any edge even when they've built up some nice tension occasionally.

A fine universal horror film. Gloria Holden makes a great leading lady. The idea of this film is rather unique for the time as well: a vampire trying to turn away from a life of vampirism.

It lacks Lugosi but oddly enough I find it otherwise better than the first Dracula...

No Lugosi, but a well-done, entertaining movie. It's stagy, but the men working on pictures in those days often knew how to write for the stage

Gloria Holden single-handedly carries this film through with her compelling performance despite the film's lackadaisical script.

Universal's Lugosi-less sequel is an oddly calm but engrossing affair.
